Its principal brands include Marlboro, Copenhagen, Skoal, Black & Mild, on! and NJOY; its main reportable segments are Smokeable Products, Oral Tobacco Products and E-Vapor Products.[1]

Altria’s stated vision is “Moving Beyond Smoking,” with an emphasis on a smoke-free future for adult smokers; its broader purpose is “Elevating the Everyday – one moment at a time.” Operations and sales are primarily in the United States, with products sold through more than 300,000 retailers across the 50 states. For FY2025, consolidated net revenue was $23.279 billion; the company’s fact sheet reports approximately 5,900 employees.[1] [1]

Products & services

Altria’s smokeable products include cigarettes sold by Philip Morris USA (PM USA), led by Marlboro, and machine-made large cigars sold by John Middleton, principally under the Black & Mild brand. In FY2025, U.S. cigarette shipments were 61.8 billion units, down 10.0% year over year, while Middleton cigar shipments were approximately 1.8 billion units, up 1.8%.[8]

Its oral products include moist smokeless tobacco (MST)—including Copenhagen, Skoal and Red Seal—and Helix’s on! nicotine pouches. FY2025 oral-segment shipments were 732.4 million units, down 5.5%. The on! range includes Wintergreen, Mint, Cinnamon, Coffee, Citrus, Berry and Original Tobacco flavors, with listed nicotine strengths of 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12 mg.[11]

Altria’s e-vapor portfolio includes NJOY tobacco- and menthol-flavored products; NJOY ACE is its principal product, and the company has disclosed regulatory restrictions prohibiting its U.S. importation and sale. Altria has also described a planned heated-tobacco platform with JTI involving Ploom devices and Marlboro HTS consumables; as of February 25, 2026, no products from the joint venture were available in the U.S. marketplace.[14][15]

For FY2025, reported net revenues imply that smokeable products represented approximately 88.0% and oral tobacco approximately 12.0% of consolidated net revenues; these are segment-level proportions, not sales shares for individual brands or products. The report does not provide product-level revenue figures.[16] [8]

Geographic presence

Altria Group, Inc. operates primarily in the United States and derives substantially all of its revenue from domestic customers; its 2025 Form 10-K does not provide a country-by-country revenue breakdown or a precise percentage attributable to U.S. sales. The company identifies limited distribution of on! PLUS in Sweden and the United Kingdom, but does not report these markets as a separate share of group revenue.[2]

Altria’s principal executive offices are in Richmond, Virginia. Its disclosed facilities include a cigarette manufacturing plant and research and technology center in Richmond, and major oral-tobacco manufacturing or processing facilities in Nashville, Tennessee, and Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The company reports approximately 5,900 employees, 97% of whom reside in the United States; this is a residence figure, not a work-location breakdown.[19] [2]

Business segments

Altria’s 2025 reportable segments are Smokeable products, Oral tobacco products, and E-vapor products. E-vapor became a separate reportable segment in 2025, and comparative segment information was recast.[23][24]

Smokeable products covers cigarettes and machine-made large cigars, including Marlboro and Black & Mild.[8][10] In 2025 it generated $20.485 billion in net revenue, approximately 88.0% of consolidated net revenue, and $10.984 billion in operating companies income (OCI).[16] Oral tobacco products covers smokeless tobacco and oral nicotine pouch products, including Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Seal, and on! [11][14] It generated $2.802 billion in net revenue, approximately 12.0% of the consolidated total, and $1.828 billion in OCI.[16] E-vapor products generated negative net revenue of $13 million (approximately −0.1% of the consolidated total) and negative OCI of $2.297 billion.[16]

The “all other” category is not a reportable segment; it includes Horizon, Helix International, and other activities, primarily research and development for new product platforms and technologies.[25] It contributed $5 million in net revenue in 2025, approximately 0.0% of the consolidated total.[16] Revenue percentages are calculated from reported segment net revenues divided by consolidated net revenue of $23.279 billion.[16] [23]

Company history

Philip Morris’s predecessor began as a tobacco and ready-made-cigarette shop in London in 1847; Philip Morris & Co., Ltd. was incorporated in New York in 1902. Marlboro was repositioned as a cigarette brand in 1924, and Philip Morris selected Richmond, Virginia, as its manufacturing hub in 1929.[9][26]

The company expanded beyond tobacco with its 1970 acquisition of Miller Brewing Company, followed by the formation of Philip Morris Companies as a publicly held parent in 1985 and the acquisitions of General Foods and Kraft in 1985 and 1988, respectively.[26][27] In 1998, Philip Morris and other major cigarette manufacturers signed the Master Settlement Agreement with U.S. states and territories.[28]

Philip Morris Companies adopted the name Altria Group, Inc. in 2003. Altria spun off Kraft Foods in 2007 and Philip Morris International in 2008, and acquired cigar and pipe-tobacco maker John Middleton in 2007 and UST Inc. in 2009.[26]

In 2018 Altria made a minority investment in JUUL, followed by a 45% stake in Cronos Group in 2019. Billy Gifford became CEO in April 2020; Altria completed its acquisition of NJOY Holdings in 2023 and assigned its exclusive U.S. IQOS commercialization rights to Philip Morris International in 2024.[32] [36]
