Company profile

ZIJIN MINING GROUP CO LTD-A

Updated

Overview

Zijin Mining Group is a multinational mining company focused on the exploration and development of copper, gold and other metallic mineral resources, including zinc, lithium, silver and molybdenum. Its activities also include mining engineering research and design. The company has operations in China and internationally, including in Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia and Suriname.[1][2]

Zijin states its purpose as “Mining for a Better Society” and its goal as becoming a green, high-tech, leading global mining company. In 2024, it reported operating income of approximately RMB303.6 billion and a total staff of 55,690 across the company and its major subsidiaries.[3] [1]

Products & services

Zijin Mining’s metal products include copper concentrate, electrodeposited and electrolytic copper, refined copper, gold bullion and concentrate, refined and processed gold, mine-produced and refined zinc, and silver. It also sells concentrates, blister copper, copper cathode and zinc bullion through a centralised trading network. Its “ZIJIN” gold bullion is a registered delivery brand on the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange; Zijin-brand electrolytic copper and zinc bullion are registered on the Shanghai Futures Exchange and London Metal Exchange.[7]

In 2024, its reported product income included RMB125.50 billion from refined, processed and trading gold, RMB49.36 billion from refined copper, RMB34.95 billion from mine-produced copper concentrate, RMB20.32 billion from mine-produced gold bullion and RMB14.98 billion from gold concentrate. Mine-produced and refined zinc generated RMB5.77 billion and RMB7.55 billion, respectively, while mine-produced silver generated RMB2.01 billion. These product-line figures are before the reported intercompany sales elimination, so they should not be read as shares of consolidated revenue.[8] The company also develops lithium products: its disclosed projects include planned lithium-carbonate production capacity, including battery-grade lithium carbonate, rather than an identified lithium revenue line in that product-income breakdown.[9] [7]

Geographic presence

Zijin Mining’s principal place of business in China is in Shanghang County, Fujian Province. Its mining footprint spans multiple Chinese provinces and territories and extends across Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. Overseas sites include copper operations in Serbia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; gold operations in Australia, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ghana; and projects or assets in Peru, Argentina, Eritrea and Russia.[12]

The company reports both operating income by business region and the location of its customers; these measures should not be conflated. In 2025, it reported RMB198.7 billion of operating income outside mainland China, versus RMB385.4 billion within mainland China before RMB235.0 billion of intercompany sales eliminations, for a consolidated total of RMB349.1 billion. Separately, it stated that approximately 63% of operating income came from mainland China customers, including approximately 27% from the Shanghai Gold Exchange.[17][18] [12]

Business segments

Zijin Mining reports four business segments: mining products, refined products, trading and others. Mining products cover the extraction and processing of metals and minerals including copper, gold, zinc, silver and lithium. Refined products include refined copper, processed gold and silver, zinc bullion, sulphuric acid and battery-grade lithium carbonate. Trading principally covers commodities such as copper cathodes, while others includes environmental-protection income and sales of products such as copper pipe and plate.[19]

Based on 2025 sales to external customers, refined products contributed approximately 47.5% of revenue, mining products 31.5%, others 12.6% and trading 8.4%. The revenue mix differs from the profit mix: mining products generated approximately 74.6% of reported segment profit, compared with 24.0% for refined products.[24] [19]

Company history

Zijin Mining traces its establishment to 1993, with Chen Jinghe identified as its founder and a key leader from that year. The business was reorganized as a joint-stock company in 2000 and adopted the name Zijin Mining Group Company Limited in 2004. It listed in Hong Kong in December 2003 and on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in April 2008.[25]

The company’s international expansion included acquiring an interest in the Kamoa copper project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2015. In 2018 it acquired a controlling stake in Serbia’s RTB Bor copper business; it gained majority ownership of Nevsun Resources that year and completed the takeover in 2019. A 2022 acquisition of Neo Lithium, whose principal asset was Argentina’s Tres Quebradas project, marked a further expansion into lithium.[30] [25]
