ZHEJIANG HUAYOU COBALT CO -A

Updated

Overview

Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd. is a Chinese energy-materials company whose business spans nickel, cobalt and lithium resource development, metals processing, battery-material manufacturing and recycling. Its principal products include lithium-ion battery cathode materials, cathode precursors, nickel-, cobalt- and lithium-based materials, and copper. The company states its mission as “create value for customers and lead industrial advancement.” [1]

Huayou has operations and projects in China and internationally, including resource and manufacturing investments in Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, South Korea and Hungary. In 2025, it reported operating revenue of approximately RMB 81.0 billion and 26,466 employees.[4] [1]

Products & services

Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt’s battery-material products include ternary cathode materials and lithium cobalt oxide for electric vehicles, energy storage and consumer electronics. It also supplies ternary precursors to cathode manufacturers and produces nickel-, cobalt- and lithium-based materials. Disclosed product grades include Ni90–95 precursors and 4.53V high-voltage lithium cobalt oxide.[8]

Its resource and intermediate products include crude nickel hydroxide, high-grade nickel matte, crude cobalt hydroxide, electroplated copper, spodumene concentrate and petalite concentrate. The company also provides used-battery services encompassing cascade utilization, resource recovery, battery maintenance and remanufacturing. In its 2024 product-revenue breakdown, nickel products accounted for approximately 23.9% of the listed total, cathode materials 14.4%, nickel intermediates 11.8% and ternary precursors 11.3%.[12] [8]

Geographic presence

Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt is based in Tongxiang, Zhejiang Province, China. Its Chinese operations include facilities and projects in Quzhou, Zhejiang, and the Guangxi region, including battery-material and metals-processing activities.[15]

Its overseas footprint includes nickel-processing operations in Indonesia, the Arcadia lithium mine in Zimbabwe, copper-cobalt mining assets in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and cathode-material production in Gumi, South Korea. The company has also been developing a cathode-material project in Hungary.[18] In its 2024 primary-business regional breakdown, domestic operating income was RMB 23.498 billion and overseas operating income was RMB 36.180 billion—approximately 39.4% and 60.6%, respectively, of the combined regional amount.[21] [15]

Business segments

Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt describes its operations through three core business areas: resources, covering the extraction and initial processing of nickel, cobalt, lithium and copper; new materials, including ternary battery precursors and nickel-, cobalt- and lithium-based materials; and new energy, focused on battery cathode materials. It also develops battery recycling activities. These are business descriptions rather than separately reported accounting segments: the company states that management evaluates the businesses as a whole and does not disclose reportable-segment information.[22]

Its 2024 primary-business revenue breakdown by industry provides an approximate mix: new-energy battery materials and raw materials accounted for 48%, nonferrous metal materials for 34%, and trade and other activities for 18%.[24] A separate product breakdown shows nickel products at approximately 24% of primary-business revenue, cathode materials 14%, ternary precursors 11%, cobalt products 6% and lithium products 5%. These product categories are an alternative view of revenue, not additional reportable segments.[14][23] [22]

Company history

In 2002, Chen Xuehua and others founded Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Nickel Materials Company Limited, the predecessor of Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt. The company began expanding into Africa in 2003, developing cobalt and copper operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[25][26]

Huayou began investing in lithium resources in 2017 through a stake in Australian-listed AVZ. In 2018, it began pursuing nickel and cobalt resource development in Indonesia, extending its activities into materials used in lithium-ion batteries. In April 2022, it completed the acquisition of Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, adding the Arcadia lithium project to its resource portfolio.[26] [25]
