ZALANDO SE

Updated

Overview

Zalando SE is a European fashion and lifestyle e-commerce and technology company, connecting consumers with brands and partners through its consumer-facing commerce and business services. Its assortment spans fashion and lifestyle products, and the company lists operations in 29 markets. Zalando describes its ambition as building infrastructure that connects customers, brands and partners in the digital fashion market.[1][2]

Founded in Berlin in 2008, Zalando reported FY2025 revenue of €12.3 billion and 17,778 employees at year-end 2025.[3] [5]

Products & services

Zalando’s consumer offering spans Fashion, Sports, Kids & Family, Beauty, Pre-owned and Designer, alongside its Zalando Lounge online outlet and the ABOUT YOU consumer business. Customers can shop through the Zalando and ABOUT YOU apps and websites.[6][7]

Digital services include Zalando Plus, a loyalty programme with 16.8 million members at FY2025 year-end, and the Zalando Assistant, a conversational shopping tool for product discovery and recommendations. About 10 million customers interacted with the Assistant in Q1 2026.[4]

For business customers, ZEOS provides logistics, fulfilment and related commerce services; Tradebyte supports marketplace integration; and SCAYLE provides enterprise commerce software.[10] In FY2025, reported revenue was approximately €11.3 billion for B2C and €1.1 billion for B2B, or roughly 92% and 9% of group revenue, respectively, based on the rounded segment figures; these are segment shares, not individual product-category shares.[11][4] [6]

Geographic presence

In FY2025, Zalando reported that the combined Zalando–ABOUT YOU business served more than 60 million active customers across 29 European markets.[12] Zalando’s shop-country listing names Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.[13] This list covers 28 countries; it differs from the 29-market figure reported for the combined business.[12][13]

Zalando describes its logistics network as pan-European. After FY2025, it announced plans to adjust the network to 14 fulfilment centres across seven countries; this is a planned network configuration, not a FY2025 year-end count.[14] The FY2025 materials reviewed report business segments rather than geographic revenue splits, and do not provide employee distribution by country.[15] [12]

Business segments

Zalando SE reports two operating segments: **B2C** and **B2B**. B2C comprises its consumer commerce businesses, including Zalando, Lounge by Zalando and ABOUT YOU, alongside supporting partner and retail-media activities; its focus is fashion and lifestyle shopping for consumers. In FY2025, B2C reported GMV of €17,560.2 million, revenue of €11,278.7 million and adjusted EBIT of €536.0 million. B2C revenue represented approximately **91.4% of group revenue** of €12,346.1 million.[15]

B2B provides services to brand partners, including ZEOS fulfilment and multi-channel logistics, Tradebyte platform integration, SCAYLE digital-commerce software, and Highsnobiety media and agency services; B2B does not contribute to GMV. In FY2025, B2B reported revenue of €1,091.3 million and adjusted EBIT of €53.9 million. After €23.9 million of intersegment revenue eliminations, external B2B revenue was €1,067.4 million, approximately **8.6% of group revenue**. The two segments’ reported revenues therefore differ from consolidated group revenue because of intersegment eliminations.[20][19] [15]

Company history

Zalando was founded in Berlin in autumn 2008 by Robert Gentz and David Schneider as an online shoe retailer. It began expanding beyond Germany in 2009, entering Austria, followed by the Netherlands and France in 2010 and several other European markets in 2011–12.[3] Its shares began trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on 1 October 2014.[23] In 2016, Zalando acquired e-commerce software provider Tradebyte.[24]

In 2023 Zalando launched ZEOS, a multi-channel platform for fashion and lifestyle brands and retailers.[25] In March 2024 it described a strategic shift toward a pan-European fashion and lifestyle e-commerce ecosystem, with consumer-facing and business-to-business activities as growth areas.[26] Co-founder David Schneider stepped down as co-CEO in September 2024, with David Schröder taking the role alongside Robert Gentz; Schneider remained on the Management Board.[27] In 2025 Zalando completed its transaction with fashion platform ABOUT YOU, reporting ownership of 91.45% of its share capital in July, and completed the squeeze-out and delisting in November.[28][29] [3]
