Company history

XPO’s predecessor, Express-1, was founded in 1989. In 2011, investor Brad Jacobs and co-investors invested in the company; Express-1 adopted the name XPO Logistics, Inc. that September, with Jacobs becoming chairman and CEO.[24][25]

XPO expanded through acquisitions in 2014, buying Pacer International to add intermodal transportation and New Breed Logistics to expand in contract logistics. In 2015, it acquired a majority interest in European transport provider Norbert Dentressangle and completed its acquisition of Con-way, including its North American less-than-truckload business.[26]

The company subsequently separated businesses through a series of transactions: it spun off GXO Logistics in August 2021, sold its North American intermodal business in March 2022, and spun off its brokerage and other asset-light transportation services as RXO in November 2022. XPO Logistics changed its corporate name to XPO, Inc. in December 2022.[30]

In 2023, XPO acquired 28 former Yellow service centers. Mario Harik, who became CEO in November 2022, was set to assume the chairmanship at the end of 2025 as Jacobs stepped down as executive chairman.[34]
