WINTRUST FINANCIAL CORP

Updated

Overview

Wintrust Financial Corporation is a U.S. financial holding company whose core business is community banking, serving individuals and businesses through personal and commercial banking services. Its operations also include residential mortgage origination, specialty finance—including insurance-premium financing, leasing and receivables financing—and wealth management. Its community banks primarily serve the Chicago metropolitan area, southern Wisconsin, northwest Indiana and west Michigan, while specialty finance operations extend across the United States and into Canada.[1][2]

Wintrust describes its mission as combining the resources of a large financial organization with the personal attention of a local bank, with customers and communities at the center of its approach.[3] At year-end 2025, it reported approximately $71.1 billion in assets and 5,902 full-time-equivalent employees in the United States and Canada; its 2025 net interest income and non-interest income together amounted to approximately $2.7 billion.[1][4] [1]

Products & services

Wintrust’s community-banking products include personal and commercial deposits, treasury management, home-equity, consumer and real-estate loans, and mortgage lending, along with ATM and online/mobile banking services. MaxSafe® distributes deposits across Wintrust’s banks to extend FDIC coverage. Specialized commercial offerings include Community Advantage association banking; mortgage-warehouse and franchise lending; Wintrust Commercial Finance equipment leasing; Wintrust Business Credit asset-based lending; SBA and commercial real-estate lending; and banking services for government, nonprofit and healthcare organizations. Wintrust Workplace Solutions offers Health Savings Accounts and employer banking products. Wintrust Mortgage originates residential mortgages, while Veterans First is a consumer-direct lending brand primarily serving veterans.[5]

Specialty finance products include commercial property-and-casualty premium financing through FIRST Insurance Funding and FIFC Canada, and life-insurance premium financing through Wintrust Life Finance, including estate-planning and multi-life trust strategies. Other offerings include equipment loans and leases through Wintrust Asset Finance, and Tricom’s short-term receivables financing and outsourced payroll processing, billing and cash-management services for staffing companies. These are financing and related services, rather than insurance underwriting.[8]

Wealth-management services include trust and investment management, asset and portfolio management, securities brokerage, investment advice, and tax-deferred like-kind-exchange services. Wintrust Private Trust Company provides trust and investment management; Great Lakes Advisors provides money management and portfolio services; Chicago Deferred Exchange Company acts as a Qualified Intermediary for IRC §1031 exchanges; and Wintrust Investments provides private-client and securities-brokerage services.[13]

In FY2025, community banking, specialty finance and wealth management accounted for 74.7%, 18.4% and 6.9%, respectively, of consolidated net revenues excluding intersegment eliminations. Within specialty-finance revenue, commercial premium finance contributed 48%, life premium finance 28%, accounts-receivable finance 22% and leasing 2%. Wintrust’s i‑BusinessBanking platform supports real-time reporting, ACH and wire payments, bill and loan payments, fraud controls and reconciliation; related treasury services include remote deposit capture, lockbox and liquidity sweeps.[17] [5]

Geographic presence

Wintrust Financial Corp.’s core banking market is the Chicago metropolitan area, southern Wisconsin, northwest Indiana and west Michigan. The company is headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois, and its wealth-management business primarily serves this core market. Its specialty-finance business serves customers nationally and in Canada.[1]

At December 31, 2025, Wintrust operated 209 banking locations through 16 nationally chartered banks. It also had commercial-and-industrial offices in downtown Chicago and Milwaukee. Wintrust Mortgage maintained retail offices in multiple states, with its largest concentrations in the Chicago, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles metropolitan areas.[2]

During 2025, the company opened two branches in the Chicago metropolitan area and three in southern Wisconsin, and closed one west Michigan branch acquired through the Macatawa acquisition. At year-end, 63.9% of commercial real estate loans were located in the Chicago metropolitan area, southern Wisconsin and west Michigan.[22][23] [1]

Business segments

Wintrust Financial reports three segments: Community Banking, Specialty Finance, and Wealth Management; the 2026 second-quarter filing continues to identify these as its reportable segments.[24]

Community Banking provides personal and commercial banking, including deposits, commercial and real-estate lending, treasury services, mortgage origination, and consumer lending.[5][7] Specialty Finance focuses on insurance-premium financing, insurance-related banking, equipment loans and leases, and accounts-receivable financing and administration.[8] Wealth Management offers trust and investment services, asset management, securities brokerage, and tax-deferred exchange services.[13]

Using 2025 segment net interest income plus noninterest income, before intersegment eliminations, approximate contributions to the combined segment total were Community Banking 74.7%, Specialty Finance 18.4%, and Wealth Management 6.9%. This measure excludes provision and expenses; the shares are calculated from the segment table rather than consolidated revenue.[25][17] [24]

Company history

Wintrust’s origins date to December 1991, when its founders opened a community bank in Lake Forest, Illinois; Edward J. Wehmer was among the founders. The holding company was incorporated in 1992 and became publicly traded in 1996.[26]

The company expanded through acquisitions, extending its community-banking network across the Chicago area and into Wisconsin. Notable early steps included the 2003 acquisition of Advantage National Bancorp, the 2004 acquisition of Town Bankshares—Wintrust’s first Wisconsin banking operation—and the 2005 acquisition of First Northwest Bancorp.[28] Later acquisitions included North Bank and Suburban Illinois Bancorp in 2015, followed by STC Capital Bank and Countryside Bank in 2019, further broadening its Chicago-area presence.[31]

In May 2023, Timothy S. Crane became president and CEO, succeeding Wehmer. Wintrust expanded into west Michigan when it completed its merger with Macatawa Bank Corporation on August 1, 2024.[35][36] [1]
