WESTERN DIGITAL CORP

Updated

Overview

Western Digital Corp. develops, manufactures, and sells data-storage products and solutions based on hard-disk-drive (HDD) technology. Since its separation from SanDisk in February 2025, Western Digital has focused on HDDs, serving cloud, client, and consumer markets with products that include high-capacity enterprise drives and external storage solutions.[1]

The company markets and sells its products globally and describes its manufacturing footprint as global. Its stated mission is to lead the data-storage market by delivering solutions for today and the future, with a vision to “unleash the power and value of data.” [5] For the fiscal year ended July 3, 2026, Western Digital reported net revenue of $12.919 billion.[8] [1]

Products & services

Western Digital’s current portfolio is centered on hard disk drives (HDDs), with products serving cloud and enterprise storage, client devices, and consumer storage. Its cloud and enterprise drives are designed for hyperscale and private-cloud data centers, enterprise systems, and smart-video applications; client HDDs target desktop and notebook OEMs, while consumer products include branded external storage. Cloud accounted for 89% of FY2026 net revenue.[9]

Named products include the Ultrastar DC HC690, a 32TB data-center HDD available with SAS or SATA interfaces and using an 11-disk SMR platform with UltraSMR and energy-assisted PMR. WD’s technology roadmap also includes ePMR, OptiNAND, UltraSMR, HAMR, and triple-stage actuators to increase capacity and areal density and reduce cost per terabyte. WD reported initial shipments of drives with up to 40TB capacity using ePMR in FY2026 Q4; HAMR is part of its next-generation roadmap.[12]

Consumer and client offerings include My Passport portable and My Book desktop external HDDs, alongside WD Blue desktop, WD Red Plus NAS, WD Purple surveillance, and WD_BLACK gaming drives. The cited My Passport USB-C model offers up to 6TB capacity and transfer speeds up to 5Gb/s; the My Book listing includes backup software and password protection. The company’s disclosures describe products and related software rather than a material standalone services business.[5] [9]

Geographic presence

In FY2026, Western Digital reported vertically integrated assembly and test operations in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, and California. Its listed facilities include manufacturing sites in Shenzhen, San Jose, Fremont, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Penang, Laguna, Bang Pa-In, and Prachinburi; research and development or administrative locations include sites in the U.S., Bangalore, Fujisawa, Kuala Lumpur, and Kuching. The company also reported sales offices across the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, including a Singapore sales and administrative office.[19]

FY2026 revenue by customer ship-to location was $5.169 billion in the U.S. (40.0%), $2.541 billion in China (19.7%), $1.487 billion in Hong Kong (11.5%), $1.095 billion in the rest of Asia (8.5%), and $2.114 billion in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (16.4%); other locations accounted for $513 million (4.0%). Percentages are calculated from reported revenue of $12.919 billion and rounded to one decimal.[22][23] [19]

Business segments

For fiscal 2026, ended July 3, Western Digital reported one operating and reportable segment: HDD, which contributed 100% of revenue ($12.919 billion). The segment focuses on data-storage devices and solutions based on hard-disk-drive technology, serving cloud data centers, enterprise storage, edge computing, smart video, and client and consumer markets.[24][25] The company previously reported HDD and Flash segments; following the February 2025 separation of its Flash business, Western Digital’s continuing operations comprise HDD.[26][2]

Cloud, Client, and Consumer are end markets, not separately reported segments. In FY2026, Cloud accounted for $11.490 billion (about 89%) of revenue, Client $726 million (about 5.6%), and Consumer $703 million (about 5.4%).[27] [24]

Company history

Western Digital was founded by Alvin B. Phillips as General Digital Corporation on April 23, 1970, initially making MOS test equipment and semiconductor products. It adopted the Western Digital name in 1971 and later shifted toward storage, producing hard drives after acquiring Tandon’s disk-drive business in 1988.[28][29]

The company expanded its storage business through the acquisition of Read-Rite assets in 2003 and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies in 2012.[30][31] In 2016, it completed the acquisition of SanDisk, broadening its business into flash storage; in 2025, Western Digital separated its Flash business through the distribution of Sandisk shares.[32][33] [28]
