Overview

West Pharmaceutical Services is a global manufacturer of containment and delivery systems for injectable medicines, serving pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Its products include injectable stoppers and seals, syringe and cartridge components, self-injection devices, and specialty containment products.[1][2]

The company’s stated mission is to “contain and deliver injectable therapies that exceed customer expectations and improve patients’ lives.” Founded in Philadelphia in 1923, West reported 2025 net sales of $3.074 billion and approximately 10,800 employees at year-end. In 2026, it described its global footprint as more than 10,000 team members across 50 sites, including 26 manufacturing facilities.[3] [7]

Products & services

West’s products include primary-containment components for injectable medicines, such as vial stoppers and seals and components for syringes and cartridges, as well as drug-delivery devices and integrated systems. Its offerings also include packaging processes such as washing, films and coatings, vision inspection and sterilization. Named products include NovaPure® elastomeric vial stoppers, Westar™ RS stoppers (washed for customer sterilization), Westar RU stoppers (washed and steam-sterilized for filling operations), and FluroTec® barrier film, which is designed to reduce drug–closure interaction while maintaining container-closure integrity.[8]

Drug-delivery offerings include SmartDose 10, a battery-powered wearable on-body injector used with a separate prefillable polymer cartridge, and the SelfDose platform. West also provides contract design and manufacturing, including multi-component and clean-room molding, in-mold labeling, ultrasonic welding, automated device assembly and drug handling; its West Vantage segment includes combination-product assembly and packaging. Analytical services include mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and ion chromatography.[12]

In the first half of 2026, sales mix was 48% high-value product components, 15% high-value delivery devices, 19% standard packaging and 18% West Vantage; the second-quarter mix was 49%, 15%, 19% and 17%, respectively.[17] [8]

Business segments

West Pharmaceutical Services reports two operating segments. **Proprietary Products** provides proprietary packaging and containment solutions, drug-delivery systems, analytical laboratory services, and related integrated services, primarily for biologic, generic, and pharmaceutical drug customers. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, it generated $1,416.9 million, approximately 82.5% of net sales.[15][27]

**West Vantage** provides design and manufacture of complex devices, automated assembly, and combination-product assembly and packaging, primarily for pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and medical-device customers. The segment was called **Contract-Manufactured Products** before a name change in Q1 2026; the company said its composition and previously reported financial information were unchanged. West Vantage generated $300.3 million, approximately 17.5% of net sales in the first half of 2026.[15][27] For full-year 2025, the corresponding segment shares were approximately 81.1% for Proprietary Products and 18.9% for Contract-Manufactured Products.[28][29] [15]

Company history

Founded by H. O. West in Philadelphia in 1923, the company initially manufactured rubber plungers for dental cartridges. During World War II, it helped Eli Lilly expand penicillin supply, and in 1945 it established an Aluminium Division, broadening beyond rubber components into aluminum seals.[4]

In 1973, West began its long-running collaboration with Japanese manufacturer Daikyo Seiko, which later yielded pharmaceutical packaging and containment technologies.[30] West expanded its drug-delivery and contract-manufacturing capabilities through acquisitions in the 2000s: it acquired a 90% stake in Medimop Medical Projects in 2005 and acquired The Tech Group that year; in 2010, it acquired La Model, a developer of an electronic patch injector.[31]

West introduced its NovaPure component line in 2012 and reported a first-in-human study of its SmartDose wearable drug-delivery platform in 2013. It announced SmartDose extensions for delivery volumes up to 10 mL in 2017.[34] [4]
