Overview

Weatherford International plc is a global energy-services company serving the oil and natural gas industry across the well life cycle, from drilling and evaluation through well construction, completion, production, intervention, and well abandonment. Its three principal operating segments are Drilling and Evaluation, Well Construction and Completions, and Production and Intervention; it also provides digital solutions and serves new-energy platforms.[1]

The company operates in approximately 75 countries and has about 305 operating locations.[5] Revenue for FY2025 was $4.918 billion.[6] Weatherford describes its mission as “Producing energy for today and tomorrow.” [7] A 2024 company announcement reported approximately 18,000 team members.[8] [1]

Products & services

Weatherford’s Drilling & Evaluation products and services include managed-pressure drilling (MPD), directional drilling, logging- and measurement-while-drilling, rotary-steerable systems, drilling fluids and wireline services. Its MPD systems use rotating control devices and automated controls for closed-loop, air, managed-pressure and underbalanced drilling; wireline offerings cover open- and cased-hole logging and cable-conveyed intervention.[9] The named Victus™ Intelligent MPD combines equipment, real-time analysis and automated responses to manage bottomhole pressure.[14]

Well Construction & Completions offerings include tubular running and handling, cementation products, completion tools, liner hangers and through-tubing well services. Capabilities include automated rig systems and real-time torque monitoring; cement plugs, float and stage equipment; completion safety valves, packers, downhole monitoring, flow control, multistage fracturing and sand control.[15] VERO™ OneTouch is an automated tubular system, while TR1P™ is a single-trip completion system designed to install upper and lower completions in one trip.[21][22]

Production & Intervention services encompass re-entry, fishing and abandonment; downhole tools and pressure-control equipment; artificial lift systems—including rod, progressing-cavity, gas, hydraulic and plunger lift—with automation and controls; digital production software, flow measurement, subsea intervention and, in select markets, pressure pumping and reservoir stimulation such as acidizing, fracturing, cementing and coiled-tubing intervention.[4] Digital offerings support monitoring, control and optimization, including drilling analytics and production surveillance and workflow optimization.[2][25]

In 2025, reported revenue was $1.371 billion for Drilling & Evaluation (27.9% of total revenue), $1.875 billion for Well Construction & Completions (38.1%), and $1.340 billion for Production & Intervention (27.2%); All Other was $332 million (6.8%). These shares are calculated from reported segment revenue and total revenue; the company did not report full-year revenue percentages for individual named products or service lines.[6] [9]

Company history

Weatherford traces its origins to the Weatherford Spring Company, established in Weatherford, Texas; a secondary source dates the founding to 1941. In 1998, the merger of EVI and Weatherford Enterra created EVI Weatherford, which later that year adopted the Weatherford International name.[37]

The company expanded through acquisitions, including Gas Services International, Oakwell Compressor Packages and Alpine Oil Services in 2000, followed by Precision Drilling’s Energy Services and International Contract Drilling divisions in 2005. In 2019, Weatherford filed for Chapter 11 protection and completed a financial restructuring that reduced funded debt by about $6.2 billion. It acquired digital-solutions provider Datagration in 2024 and completed its acquisition of NCS Multistage in 2026.[41]
