Company history
Mylan was founded in 1961 in West Virginia, initially distributing medicines to rural pharmacies and physicians. In 2007 it expanded its manufacturing presence in India through its acquisition of a controlling stake in Matrix Laboratories. Pfizer established Upjohn as a standalone business in 2018, drawing on its Established Medicines division.[20][21]
Mylan and Pfizer announced plans in July 2019 to combine Mylan with Pfizer’s Upjohn business, and announced Viatris as the new company name that November. Viatris was formed and launched on November 16, 2020, through the combination of Mylan and Upjohn.[22][23][24]
In 2021, Viatris announced FDA approval of Semglee as the first interchangeable biosimilar under the 351(k) pathway, followed by its commercial launch later that year. In 2022, it completed the transfer of its biosimilars portfolio to Biocon Biologics. In 2024, the company continued reshaping its portfolio, acquiring global rights to Idorsia’s selatogrel and cenerimod assets and completing divestitures that included its India API, OTC and women’s healthcare businesses.[25][26][27][28][29] [24][25][26][27][28][29][20][21][22][23]
