VALVOLINE INC

Updated

Overview

Valvoline Inc. is an automotive preventive-maintenance services company that operates and franchises retail service centers in the United States and Canada, including Valvoline Instant Oil Change and Great Canadian Oil Change locations. Its services include oil changes and other routine vehicle maintenance such as battery, bulb and wiper replacement and tire rotations.[1][2] The company says its purpose is to provide quick, easy and trusted maintenance to help people travel safely.[3]

Valvoline reported fiscal 2025 net revenues of approximately $1.71 billion and more than 11,000 team members.[4][5] In July 2026, it described its network as comprising more than 2,400 service centers across the U.S. and Canada.[6] [1]

Products & services

Valvoline Inc.’s principal customer-facing offerings are preventive-maintenance services at Valvoline Instant Oil Change (VIOC), Great Canadian Oil Change and Express Care locations. Services include oil changes, battery, bulb and wiper replacements, tire rotations, and other manufacturer-recommended maintenance; VIOC describes its oil changes as approximately 15-minute, stay-in-your-car services.[2][1] The company reported a system of 2,456 stores at June 30, 2026, comprising 1,232 company-operated and 1,224 franchised locations.[7]

Valvoline Inc.’s current retail-service model should be distinguished from the sale of branded lubricant products. The company sold its former Global Products segment in 2023; VGO owns the Valvoline brand for product uses, and Valvoline Inc. buys substantially all lubricants and certain ancillary products used in its stores from VGO.[8][9] Examples of products in the broader Valvoline-branded range include Restore & Protect Full Synthetic motor oil, offered in multiple viscosity grades and described as using Active Clean and Liqui-Shield technologies; Advanced Protection Full Synthetic motor oil, with grades carrying specifications including ILSAC GF-7A and API SQ; Zerex Dex-Cool orange organic-acid-technology coolant; DEXRON VI/MERCON LV full-synthetic automatic transmission fluid; and Moly-Fortified Gray Full Synthetic Grease, with a stated operating range of −40°F to 400°F.[10]

Company filings do not provide product-by-product or individual-service percentages of performance.[4][16] [2]

Geographic presence

Valvoline’s retail-service footprint is concentrated in the United States and Canada. At the end of FY2025, the company reported 2,180 system-wide stores in those countries [17]. The latest interim snapshot, at June 30, 2026, counted 2,456 stores worldwide—1,232 company-operated and 1,224 franchised—but did not provide a country-by-country split [7]. Valvoline is headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, where it leases approximately 105,000 square feet of office space; at FY2025 year-end, it owned or leased property associated with 1,016 company-operated service centers across the U.S. and Canada [18].

FY2025 disclosures do not provide a country or regional breakdown of revenue [19]. The company’s long-lived assets are heavily U.S.-weighted: U.S. property, plant and equipment represented about 95.6% of the reported total, and U.S. operating-lease assets represented about 95.3%; the remaining assets were reported as non-U.S.[20]. Valvoline reported approximately 11,400 employees in the U.S. and Canada at FY2025 year-end, without a country-level distribution [21]. [17]

Business segments

Valvoline reports one operating segment, Retail Services, which comprises company-operated and franchised automotive preventive-maintenance service centers. Services include quick oil changes and other routine maintenance, such as battery, bulb and wiper replacement and tire rotations.[22]

Retail Services accounted for 100% of Valvoline’s FY2025 consolidated net revenue, or $1,710.3 million. This figure is reported company revenue, not system-wide sales generated by franchisees.[24][4] Valvoline’s former Global Products segment is no longer part of the company’s current segment structure; it was sold in 2023 and reported as discontinued operations.[25] [22]

Company history

Valvoline traces its origins to 1866, when Dr. John Ellis developed a lubricant from distilled crude oil; the Valvoline name was trademarked in 1873. Ashland acquired the business in 1950. In the late 1980s, Valvoline expanded into quick-lube services through Valvoline Instant Oil Change, alongside its motor-oil business.[26]

Valvoline became a publicly traded company through an IPO in September 2016 and completed its separation from Ashland in May 2017.[27][28] In 2018, it acquired Great Canadian Oil Change, expanding its quick-lube operations into Canada.[29] In 2023, Valvoline completed the sale of its Global Products business to Aramco, and Lori Flees succeeded Sam Mitchell as CEO.[30][31] [26]
