Business segments

Valley National Bancorp reports two operating segments: Consumer Banking and Commercial Banking. Treasury and Corporate Other is reported separately as a residual category for activities not assigned to the operating segments, rather than as a third operating segment. The company reported no operating-segment changes during the first half of 2026.[20]

Consumer Banking includes residential mortgages, automobile and other consumer loans, home-equity loans, and wealth-management-related lending. It also encompasses wealth management and insurance services, including asset-management advisory, brokerage, trust, insurance, tax-credit advisory, and private banking.[8] Commercial Banking focuses on commercial-and-industrial, construction, owner-occupied real-estate, and other commercial real-estate lending.[25][26] Treasury and Corporate Other mainly includes Treasury-managed investment securities and income, along with certain support-function and other items not directly assigned to the operating segments.[27][28]

As an approximate contribution measure, net interest income plus non-interest income before provision for credit losses accounted for about 19% from Consumer Banking, 73% from Commercial Banking, and 8% from Treasury and Corporate Other in FY2025. For the first half of 2026, the corresponding shares were approximately 19%, 72%, and 9%. These percentages are calculated from the reported segment tables.[29][30] [20]

Company history

Valley National Bancorp traces its origins to Passaic Park Trust Company, founded in 1927. It became Bank of Passaic and Trust Company in the mid-1930s, then The Bank of Passaic and Clifton after acquiring Bank of Allwood in 1956. Following its 1976 acquisition of Bank of Wayne, it adopted the Valley National Bank name.[4]

Valley expanded into New York through its 2001 merger with Merchants New York Bancorp and its 2011 merger with State Bancorp. It broadened its Florida presence by completing its merger with CNLBancshares in 2015 and acquiring USAmeriBancorp effective in 2018. In 2018, Ira Robbins succeeded Gerald H. Lipkin as CEO.[31]

The company continued its regional expansion with the 2019 merger of Oritani Financial, the 2021 merger with The Westchester Bank Holding Corporation, and its 2022 acquisition of Bank Leumi USA.[36] [4]
