Overview

Unum Group is a provider of financial protection benefits, selling primarily through the workplace. Its core offerings include disability, life, accident, critical illness, dental, and vision benefits, along with related services designed to help individuals manage the financial effects of illness, injury, or loss of life.[1] The company’s principal operating businesses are Unum US, Unum International, and Colonial Life, with additional Closed Block and Corporate segments supporting the group structure.[4][5]

Geographically, Unum Group is defined mainly by operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland, with limited activity in other countries.[1][6] Its stated purpose is “Helping the working world thrive throughout life’s moments.”[7][8] As of December 31, 2024, the company employed 11,063 people, roughly 85% of whom were based in the United States, and it reported 2024 total revenue of about $12.9 billion, indicating a large-scale insurance and employee benefits platform.

Products & services

Unum Group’s products are centered on workplace insurance and related administration. Its core offerings include group long-term and short-term disability, group life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), voluntary benefits, individual disability, dental and vision, and fee-based services such as leave management and administrative services only (ASO). Group long-term disability is designed to replace income during extended absences caused by sickness or injury and can include rehabilitation, retraining, and re-employment services, while short-term disability generally covers income loss for up to 26 weeks. Group life is primarily renewable term insurance, often tied to employee wages and sometimes including waiver-of-premium provisions during disability, and AD&D pays additional benefits for accidental death or severe injury.[2]

Its supplemental and voluntary portfolio includes accident, disability, life, hospital indemnity, cancer, and critical illness products, typically sold through payroll deduction and issued on either a group or individual basis. Individual disability policies are marketed largely to multi-life employer groups as a supplement to employer-sponsored coverage and typically replace about 30% to 75% of monthly earned income. Dental products include insured and self-insured plans such as PPO and scheduled reimbursement designs, and vision products cover routine vision services through both in-network and out-of-network benefits.[14]

Through Colonial Life and its international operations, Unum also offers more specialized protection products. Colonial Life’s accident, sickness, and disability line includes short-term disability, accident-only, dental, vision, and other accident and health policies that pay for events such as hospital admission, confinement, and surgery; its life products are primarily universal life, whole life, and term life; and its cancer and critical illness products provide treatment-based benefits or lump-sum/fixed payments upon covered diagnoses. In the UK, supplemental offerings include group critical illness, which pays a lump sum on a covered event, and group dental, which pays fixed benefits or a portion of treatment costs.[17]

In Unum US’s disclosed premium mix, group disability represented 46.1% of segment premium income, group life and AD&D 28.6%, and supplemental and voluntary 25.3%. Within Colonial Life, accident, sickness, and disability accounted for 54.3% of segment premium income, life 25.7%, and cancer and critical illness 20.0%. In Unum International, UK group long-term disability represented 44.0% of segment premium income, UK group life 22.3%, UK supplemental 17.4%, and Poland 16.3%.

Geographic presence

Unum Group’s operations and revenue base are centered in the United States, with additional international operations in the United Kingdom and Poland through Unum International.[27][28] The company states that premium income is primarily derived from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland, and that it has no material foreign revenues or assets outside the operations reported in Unum International.[29] In 2024, Unum International accounted for about 8% of consolidated adjusted operating revenue.[30] Based on 2024 premium income, Unum US represented about 65.6% of total premium income, Unum International about 9.0%, Colonial Life about 17.0%, and Closed Block about 8.4%.[31] Within Unum International, the United Kingdom generated $794.9 million of premium income and Poland generated $154.6 million, equal to roughly 83.7% and 16.3% of that segment, respectively, or about 7.6% and 1.5% of companywide premium income.[31]

Business segments

Unum Group reports three principal operating business segments—Unum US, Unum International, and Colonial Life—and two other reporting segments, Closed Block and Corporate. Unum US includes group disability, group life and accidental death and dismemberment, and supplemental and voluntary products such as voluntary benefits, individual disability, and dental and vision. Unum International covers operations in the U.K. and Poland, including U.K. group disability, group life, and supplemental products, and Poland individual and group life products with accident and health riders. Colonial Life focuses on workplace-marketed accident, sickness, disability, dental and vision, life, cancer, and critical illness products. Closed Block consists of group and individual long-term care and other products no longer actively marketed, while Corporate holds unallocated corporate investment income, debt interest expense, and other corporate items.[34]

Using 2024 premium income as the clearest measure for the insurance businesses, Unum US contributed about 66% of segment premium income, Colonial Life about 17%, Unum International about 9%, and Closed Block about 8%; Corporate had no premium income. On a 2024 adjusted operating revenue basis, the mix was somewhat broader because Closed Block includes meaningful investment income: Unum US represented about 60% of adjusted operating revenue, Closed Block about 16%, Colonial Life about 15%, Unum International about 8%, and Corporate about 0.5%.

Company history

Unum Group traces its roots to 1848, when Union Mutual was chartered in Maine. Another important predecessor, Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company, was founded in Chattanooga in 1887, adding to the lineage that later formed the modern company. In 1979, Union Mutual changed its name to Unum Corporation, and in 1986 it adopted a holding-company structure, milestones that marked its evolution from a mutual insurer into its later corporate form.[40]

In 1993, Colonial Life became a wholly owned subsidiary of Unum, expanding the group through a significant acquisition. In 1999, Unum Corporation merged with Provident Companies to create UnumProvident, a defining combination in the company’s history. The company then adopted its current name, Unum Group, in 2007.
