Overview

Universal Display Corporation (UDC) develops and commercializes organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies and materials for display and solid-state lighting applications. Its business combines sales of proprietary OLED materials with technology licensing and related commercialization. OLEDs are used in products including smartphones, televisions, monitors, wearables, computers and automotive displays.[1][2]

The company serves a global customer base, with significant industry activity in Asia-Pacific, and maintains subsidiaries in Ireland, Korea, Japan, China and Hong Kong, as well as a representative office in Taiwan.[3][4] UDC describes its mission as enabling the OLED ecosystem and helping grow the OLED industry; its business commenced in 1994.[5][6] For scale, FY2025 revenue was approximately $650.6 million, and the company careers site describes a workforce of approximately 470 employees.[7][8] [1]

Products & services

Universal Display’s core products include proprietary UniversalPHOLED® phosphorescent emitter materials and host materials used in OLED emissive layers. Its emitters are incorporated in small quantities into host materials, and the company reports commercially produced emitters for red, yellow, green and light-blue light; its development work also covers materials and device architectures for red, green, yellow, blue and white OLEDs.[9] The company also identifies UniversalP2OLED® printable phosphorescent OLEDs, FOLED® flexible OLEDs, WOLED™ white OLEDs, and Universal OVJP® (Organic Vapor Jet Printing) among its technologies. UDC describes OVJP as a solvent-less, mask-less organic-material deposition process with potential for directly printing large-area RGB OLED displays.[12][13]

UDC licenses OLED technologies and supplies materials under customer agreements; its filings describe the material supply and technology licensing as generally accounted for together as a single performance obligation.[14] Its Adesis business provides contract research and chemical services, including development and manufacturing, chemical synthesis, research and commercialization, specialty organic chemistry, and selective toll manufacturing.[15][16] In FY2025, revenue was $353.0 million from material sales (54.3% of total), $275.1 million from royalty and license fees (42.3%), and $22.5 million from contract research services (3.5%), out of $650.6 million total revenue; percentages are calculated from reported amounts.[7] [9]

Geographic presence

In 2025, Universal Display generated $650.6 million in revenue. By customer location, South Korea accounted for $383.5 million (59.0%), China $238.2 million (36.6%), the United States $24.4 million (3.8%), Japan $2.8 million (0.4%), and other non-U.S. locations $1.7 million (0.3%); in total, about 96% of revenue came from outside North America.[17]

The company’s reported geographic footprint includes subsidiaries in Ireland, South Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, and a representative office in Taiwan. Its identified facilities include corporate and R&D offices in Ewing, New Jersey; Adesis offices and manufacturing laboratories in Delaware; an OLED-material manufacturing facility in Shannon, Ireland; and application centers in South Korea and Hong Kong.[3] Universal Display announced the opening of its Chengdu, China, application center in June 2026.[20] [17]

Business segments

Universal Display reports one reportable segment: OLED technologies and materials. Adesis is included in this segment rather than reported separately, with operating performance assessed on a combined basis. The segment focuses on developing and commercializing OLED materials, technologies and device designs for display and lighting applications.[21][22]

The company does not report its revenue streams as separate business segments. For FY2025, material sales contributed approximately 54.3% of revenue ($352.974 million of $650.611 million) [7]; royalty and license fees contributed approximately 42.3% ($275.134 million) [7]; and contract research services contributed approximately 3.5% ($22.503 million) [7]. Company history

Universal Display Corporation’s business began in 1994, following the 1985 organization of its Pennsylvania parent; founder Sherwin I. Seligsohn led the company as it became publicly traded in 1996. In 1998, its research team discovered phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) technology, developed with academic collaborators. The company recorded its first commercial use of red PHOLED materials in 2003.[6][23]

Commercial milestones followed as Samsung SDI launched an active-matrix OLED mobile-phone display using UniversalPHOLED in 2007, and Samsung introduced the Galaxy S1 with UDC materials and technology in 2010. Steven V. Abramson became CEO in 2008. UDC expanded its intellectual-property portfolio by purchasing Fujifilm’s worldwide OLED portfolio in 2012, then entered long-term OLED patent-license and materials-purchase agreements with LG Display in 2015.[23]

In 2016, UDC acquired research company Adesis and purchased more than 500 OLED-related patents and applications from BASF. It expanded its manufacturing footprint in Ireland, where its Shannon materials facility became operational in 2022. In 2023, UDC acquired more than 550 OLED-related patents and applications from Merck and purchased the Shannon site.[23] [6]
