Products & services

UnitedHealth Group’s insurance offerings through UnitedHealthcare include employer-sponsored and individual medical products, with major product families spanning high-deductible consumer-driven benefit plans, traditional medical plans, clinical and pharmacy products, and specialty benefits such as vision, dental, accident protection, critical illness, disability and hospital indemnity coverage. For self-funded employers, it also provides administrative and other management services, including coordination of medical and related services, transaction processing, and access to contracted physician, hospital, dental and vision networks.[12]+3

Its senior and government-program products include Medicare Advantage plans in HMO, PPO, point-of-service, private-fee-for-service and Special Needs Plan formats; stand-alone and bundled Medicare Part D prescription drug plans; and Medicare Supplement products designed to cover coinsurance and deductible gaps in traditional Medicare. In state-sponsored coverage, UnitedHealthcare Community & State administers Medicaid-related products including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, Children’s Health Insurance Programs, Dual SNPs, Long-Term Services and Supports, and Aged, Blind and Disabled programs, with benefits tailored for children, pregnant women, adults, seniors and institutionalized or nursing-home-eligible populations. Premium revenues from CMS represented 40% of UnitedHealth Group’s consolidated revenue in 2024, mostly from the Medicare & Retirement business.[16]+5

Through Optum, the company also sells care delivery, pharmacy and health technology services. Optum Health provides primary, specialty and surgical care across clinical sites, in-home and virtual settings, along with post-acute care planning, telehealth, remote patient monitoring and health care financial services; its offerings are structured through value-based, administrative-fee and fee-for-service arrangements. Optum Rx provides pharmacy care services through a network of more than 65,000 retail pharmacies, plus home delivery, specialty and community health pharmacies, in-home and community-based infusion services, rare-disease and gene-therapy support, and direct-to-consumer offerings; it also manages limited and ultra-limited distribution drugs in areas including oncology, HIV, pain management and ophthalmology, and handled $178 billion of pharmaceutical spending in 2024, including $74 billion in specialty drugs. Optum Insight provides software, analytics and platform services for hospitals, physicians, health plans and public-sector clients, including payment integrity, risk and quality services, and technology to modernize Medicaid and other safety-net program administration.[22]+4 [12]+14

Geographic presence

UnitedHealth Group’s footprint is predominantly U.S.-based. In its geographic disclosure, the company states that its non-U.S. revenues and fixed assets are primarily related to UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual’s international businesses [27]. Within UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, 2024 revenue was $74.489 billion from domestic operations and $3.667 billion from global operations, which equates to roughly 95% domestic and 5% global revenue for that business line [28]. The company’s U.S. operating reach is also reflected in UnitedHealthcare Community & State, which participated in programs in 33 states and the District of Columbia [29].

Internationally, the company’s disclosed footprint has included Brazil and other South American markets, but it completed the sale of its Brazil operations and classified its remaining South American operations as held for sale as part of an exit from South American markets [30][31]. UnitedHealth Group says it owns and leases properties in the United States and other countries, and its principal executive offices are located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.[32][33]. Business segments

UnitedHealth Group officially reports four segments: UnitedHealthcare, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. The company also describes itself at a higher level as two businesses, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, with Optum consisting of the three Optum segments.[6]+2

UnitedHealthcare is the insurance and benefits platform, offering a broad range of health benefits through UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement, and UnitedHealthcare Community & State. Optum Health focuses on care delivery, value-based care, care management, wellness and consumer engagement, and health financial services, including in-person, in-home, virtual, and digital care. Optum Insight provides analytics, technology, and health care services to hospitals, physicians, health plans, governments, and life sciences organizations, with an emphasis on efficiency, cost reduction, compliance, and system modernization. Optum Rx is the pharmacy care business, covering retail network contracting, home delivery, specialty and community pharmacy, infusion, purchasing, and clinical programs such as formulary management, adherence, and therapy management.[4]+3

Using 2024 unaffiliated customer revenue as the best basis for mix, UnitedHealthcare contributed about 75% of revenue, Optum Rx about 14%, Optum Health about 10%, and Optum Insight about 2%; combined, the three Optum segments represented about 25% of unaffiliated revenue. Reported total segment revenues are not additive for mix analysis because they include affiliated/intersegment sales between segments.[39][40] [6]+8

Company history

UnitedHealth Group traces its roots to 1974, when Richard Burke launched Charter Med in Minnetonka, Minnesota to manage the nonprofit Physicians Health Plan of Minnesota.[41] In 1977, UnitedHealthCare Corp. became a legal for-profit entity and began buying and managing HMOs, marking the start of the company’s expansion as a health-plan operator.[41] UnitedHealthCare became a public company in 1984, and in 1998 it rebranded as UnitedHealth Group.[41][42]

In the early 2000s, UnitedHealth Group grew through a series of acquisitions, including AmeriChoice in 2002, Mid Atlantic Medical Services in 2004, Oxford Health Plans in 2004, and PacifiCare in 2005.[43]+3 The company also reshaped its organization and leadership over time: Stephen J. Hemsley became chief executive officer in 2006, UnitedHealth Group unified its health services businesses under the Optum brand in 2011, David Wichmann became CEO in 2017, and Andrew Witty succeeded him in 2021.[47]+3 [50]+9
