UNITED STATES CELLULAR CORP

Updated

Overview

United States Cellular Corporation (UScellular) was a U.S. wireless telecommunications company, providing voice, messaging and data services, devices, and network access to consumers and businesses. Before its wireless operations were sold in 2025, it served customers across parts of 21 states and had approximately 4.4 million retail connections.[1][2]

After the sale of its wireless operations and certain spectrum assets to T-Mobile, the company changed its name to Array Digital Infrastructure, Inc. Its remaining core business is owning and leasing wireless tower space and providing related services. At year-end 2025, it owned 4,450 towers across 19 states; FY2025 revenue from continuing operations was $163.0 million.[3]

Founded in 1983, the company’s historical identity was shaped by its U.S. wireless network and customer business; its current stated focus is connecting America through digital infrastructure. Its 2025 shareholder letter described an organization of approximately 60 associates.[6] [1]

Products & services

Before its wireless operations were sold to T-Mobile effective August 1, 2025, United States Cellular Corp. (UScellular) offered consumer wireless voice, messaging and data services, along with wireless roaming and fixed-wireless home internet. Its wireless network supported low-, mid- and high-band spectrum; the company reported deploying mid-band 5G at sites covering nearly 50% of data and voice traffic by year-end 2024.[8][9]

Its devices included handsets, tablets, mobile hotspots, routers, home phones and accessories, sold directly and through agents or distributors, including through installment-payment plans.[2][10] A named consumer plan in UScellular’s October 2024 terms, Unlimited Everyday, included 50 GB of prioritized data, unlimited talk and text, and LTE data in Mexico and Canada; speeds could be reduced further during congestion after the priority threshold.[11]

In 2024, equipment sales were $783 million, or about 21% of the Wireless segment’s $3,667 million in operating revenue; service revenue was $2,884 million, or about 79% (shares calculated from reported figures).[12] [8]

Geographic presence

As of June 30, 2026, the company—now Array, formerly United States Cellular Corporation—reported owning 4,456 towers across 19 states.[13] Its latest filings describe Array’s tower footprint; the final detailed pre-divestiture wireless footprint reported for 2024 was service across portions of 21 states, reaching areas with a combined population of about 33 million.[14]

At the end of 2024, the wireless business had 7,010 cell sites in service, including 4,409 owned sites.[17] The company’s corporate headquarters and principal executive office were in Chicago, Illinois; its local offices, retail stores, call centers and other facilities were located primarily in its operating markets.[18][19] It reported approximately 4,100 full- and part-time associates at year-end 2024, without a geographic breakdown.[20] [13]

Business segments

UScellular’s 2024 reporting identified two reportable segments: **Wireless**, which provides wireless services and equipment, and **Towers**, which leases company-owned tower space to other wireless carriers. The company’s Q1 2025 filing retained this two-segment structure.[21][22]

For 2024, Wireless segment revenue was approximately **$3.667 billion** and Towers revenue was **$234 million**, compared with consolidated revenue of **$3.770 billion**. That is about **97.3%** and **6.2%** of consolidated revenue, respectively, before **$131 million** of intercompany eliminations (about **−3.5%**); consequently, the gross segment percentages exceed 100% before eliminations.[23]

Within Wireless, reported revenue comprised retail service of **$2.674 billion** (about **72.9%** of Wireless revenue), equipment sales of **$783 million** (**21.4%**), and “Other” revenue of **$210 million** (**5.7%**). These are revenue categories within the Wireless segment, not additional reportable segments.[12] [21]

Company history

United States Cellular Corporation was founded in 1983. During the 1990s, it expanded its network and customer base, reaching 500,000 subscribers and 1,000 cell sites in 1995, one million subscribers in 1996, and two million customers and 2,000 cell sites in 1998.[26]

In 2002, the company entered the Chicago market through an acquisition. In 2013, it completed the sale of its Chicago, St. Louis, central Illinois and other markets to Sprint subsidiaries for $480 million.[26][27]

In 2019, U.S. Cellular announced plans to launch 5G service in Iowa and Wisconsin, with deployment planned for 2020. In 2024, it and its parent, TDS, agreed to sell the wireless operations and selected spectrum assets to T-Mobile; the transaction closed in 2025. The corporation subsequently changed its name to Array Digital Infrastructure, Inc.[28]

In January 2026, Array completed a further sale of selected spectrum licenses to AT&T for $1.018 billion, extending the shift away from its former wireless operating business.[31] [26]
