At year-end 2025, it reported 237 full-service offices: 48 in West Virginia; 100 collectively across Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Northern Neck, Richmond and Lynchburg areas and the Northern Virginia–Maryland–Washington, D.C. metro area; 43 in North Carolina; 25 in South Carolina; 16 in the Atlanta area; four in southwestern Pennsylvania; and one in southeastern Ohio. Charleston, West Virginia, is its headquarters, and Parkersburg, West Virginia, is the location of its executive offices.[3]
Its disclosed markets include communities throughout West Virginia; parts of Ohio and southwestern Pennsylvania; the Washington, D.C.–Maryland–Northern Virginia area and other Virginia markets; South Carolina’s Coastal, Midlands and Upstate regions; North Carolina markets including Wilmington, Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte; and the Atlanta metropolitan area.[1] The company website describes its service area as eight states plus Washington, D.C., while its investor-relations overview reports more than 240 offices; these website figures are distinct from the 2025 year-end office count.[11][12] The 2025 report describes community banking as a single reportable segment and does not provide a state-by-state revenue breakdown.[2] [3][1][2][11][12]
Business segments
United Bankshares reports one operating and reportable segment: community banking, conducted through United Bank. Its activities include deposit-taking; personal, credit-card, commercial, floor-plan, construction and real-estate lending; residential mortgage origination and secondary-market sales; and trust, brokerage, safe-deposit and wire-transfer services.[13]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, community banking represented approximately 100% of reported segment results. On a revenue-proxy basis—net interest income plus other income—the segment contributed about $640.4 million; it also accounted for 100% of net income ($255.6 million) and reported segment assets (approximately $33.8 billion). These percentages reflect the company’s single-segment reporting, not a breakdown among products or business lines.[14][15][4] [13][14][14][14][14][15][4]
Company history
The company’s banking roots date to 1839, when the Northwestern Bank of Virginia opened a branch in Parkersburg, later known as First National Bank of Parkersburg; this is the lineage of a predecessor bank, not the founding date of the present holding company.[16][17] In the early 1980s, Parkersburg National Bank joined United Bankshares’ holding-company structure; it became United National Bank in 1985, and acquisitions in 1986 expanded the company into Charleston. United Bankshares became publicly traded in 1987 and reached $1 billion in assets in 1988.[17][18][7]
Later milestones included the 2014 acquisition of Virginia Commerce Bancorp, which broadened United’s Washington, D.C.-area presence, and the 2017 acquisition of Cardinal Financial.[19][20] United acquired Carolina Financial in 2020 and Community Bankers Trust in 2021; in 2025, it completed the acquisition of Piedmont Bancorp, extending its operations into Georgia.[21][22][23][24][25] [26][16][17][18][7][19][20][21][22][25]
