Company history
UBS traces its heritage to Swiss banks founded in the 19th century: Bank in Winterthur dates to 1862, and predecessor combinations formed Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC) in 1897. Union Bank of Switzerland was created in 1912 through the merger of Bank in Winterthur and Toggenburger Bank; it later expanded through the 1945 takeover of Eidgenössische Bank and its 1967 merger with Interhandel.[32][33][34] In 1997, Union Bank of Switzerland and SBC agreed to combine, and UBS AG was formed on 29 June 1998. UBS acquired US brokerage and asset-management firm PaineWebber in 2000.[35][36][37]
Following significant losses during the 2008 financial crisis, UBS announced a refocus of its Investment Bank on core strengths and client franchises.[38] UBS Group AG was incorporated in 2014 as the Group’s holding company.[39] In 2023, UBS agreed to acquire Credit Suisse; the deal closed on 12 June, and Credit Suisse Group AG merged into UBS Group AG. UBS AG and Credit Suisse AG merged in May 2024, followed by the merger of their Swiss banking entities in July.[40][41][42][43][44] In February 2026, Credit Suisse (USA) LLC merged into UBS Americas Inc.[45] [37][42][45][32][33][34][35][36][38][39][40][41][43][44]
