Company history
TUI’s corporate roots date to 1923, when Preussag was founded as an industrial company. The travel business began in December 1968, when several German tour operators joined to form Touristik Union International (TUI).[27][28]
Preussag’s acquisition of Hapag-Lloyd in 1997–98 marked a significant step in its transformation toward tourism and transport. In 2000, it made a public bid for Thomson Travel Group, and in 2002 it changed its name to TUI AG.[29][30][31]
In 2007, TUI’s tourism division and First Choice Holidays combined to form TUI Travel PLC. TUI AG and TUI Travel merged in 2014, bringing their businesses together as an integrated group.[32][27][33] [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]
