Company history
Trimble was founded in Silicon Valley in 1978 by Charles “Charlie” Trimble and two partners. In 1984, it introduced its first commercial GPS receiver, an early milestone in bringing GPS technology into commercial use.[6][22]
The company broadened its surveying and machine-control capabilities with its 2000 acquisition of Spectra Precision. In 2012, it acquired the SketchUp 3D-modeling business from Google, and in 2018 completed its acquisition of construction-management software provider Viewpoint.[23][24][25]
Rob Painter became president and CEO in January 2020, succeeding Steve Berglund. Trimble completed its acquisition of transportation software company Transporeon in 2023, and in 2024 formed PTx Trimble with AGCO after transferring its agricultural business into the joint venture. In 2025, it completed the sale of its global transportation telematics business to Platform Science. In 2026, Trimble acquired construction document-analysis company Document Crunch.[26][27][28][29][30] [26][30][6][22][23][24][25][27][28][29]
