Overview

Trelleborg AB is a Sweden-based industrial group that develops engineered polymer solutions for critical applications in demanding environments, drawing on materials technology expertise and application-specific customer knowledge.[1][2] Its purpose is summarized as “protecting the essential” in society, including people, the environment, infrastructure and industrial equipment.[3] The company is organized around three core business areas: Sealing Solutions, which supplies polymer-based seals and components for sectors such as aerospace, automotive and diversified industrials; Industrial Solutions, which provides polymer-based solutions for selected industrial applications and infrastructure projects; and Medical Solutions, which supplies integrated polymer-based solutions for medical and life science applications.[4]

Trelleborg combines global capabilities with a local operating presence.[7] It has operations in more than 40 countries, approximately 100 manufacturing sites, and sales to just over 140 countries.[8] Its footprint is centered on Europe, North and South America, and Asia, and its 2024 sales mix was 45% Europe, 32% North and South America, and 23% Asia and the rest of the world.[9][10] For 2024, Trelleborg reported net sales of SEK 34,170 million and 16,782 employees, indicating a sizeable global industrial platform.[11][12] [1]

Products & services

Trelleborg’s current products are concentrated in polymer-based sealing systems and industrial polymer solutions. In sealing, it sells critical seals and related components under brands including American Variseal®, Busak+Shamban, Forsheda®, Orkot®, Polypac®, Quad®, Quad-Ring®, Stefa® and Wills Rings®, serving aerospace, automotive and diversified industrial applications.[13][4] The company states that this portfolio holds a top-three position in sealing solutions for industrial applications, semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, and food, beverage and water equipment, and leading positions in critical aerospace seals and components.[14][15] Specific capability examples include aircraft landing-gear seals designed to withstand up to 25,000 landings and Stefa® radial shaft seals launched with a claimed 20% reduction in energy consumption in customer applications.[16][17]

Its industrial product lines include sealing profiles, automotive boots, engineered coated fabrics, LNG transfer systems, industrial hoses, pipe seals, antivibration components, and marine infrastructure systems.[18][19] Named products and brands include AutoMoor, SmartPort, SCN Super Cone Fenders, SeaGuard, Sealine®, Gall Thomson, Gutteling, HALL, Flexxcurve, FluoroSeal®, Kledam®, Metalastik®, Trellvac and Trilobe, while Dartex® and Fairprene® are part of its engineered coated-fabrics offering.[20][18] The marine offering also includes software and digital services: Trelleborg describes software combined with berthing and mooring systems to create smarter, more automated ports, and an increasingly digital marine offering that provides real-time insights to improve efficiency and safety in demanding operations.[21][22]

Where product exposure is quantified, Industrial Solutions’ sales mix was 85% diversified industrials, 8% automotive, 2% healthcare & medical and 5% aerospace, while Sealing Solutions’ mix was 53% diversified industrials, 28% automotive and 19% aerospace.[23] Based on 2024 external net sales, Industrial Solutions represented about 44% of group sales and Sealing Solutions about 47%.[24] Tire and wheel products were part of the former Wheel Systems business, which was divested in 2023.[25] [13]

Geographic presence

Trelleborg is headquartered in Trelleborg, Sweden, and has a broad international footprint with operations in some 40 countries, manufacturing at about 100 production sites, and sales to customers in just over 140 countries worldwide [2][26].

Its sales are weighted toward Europe and the Americas. In 2024, Europe accounted for 44% of sales, North and South America for 33%, and Asia plus the rest of the world for 23%, on total annual sales of approximately SEK 34 billion [27][28].

The employee base is also geographically diversified, with 8,282 employees in Europe, 3,998 in North and South America, and 3,615 in Asia and the rest of the world, for a total of 15,895 [29]. Among the largest individual country workforces disclosed were the United States with 3,185 employees, China with 1,680, Germany with 1,227, and Sweden with 911 [30]. [2]

Business segments

Trelleborg’s current segment reporting is organized around three business areas that function as its operating segments: Trelleborg Industrial Solutions, Trelleborg Medical Solutions, and Trelleborg Sealing Solutions.[31][32] Industrial Solutions focuses on polymer-based critical solutions for selected industrial applications and infrastructure projects; Medical Solutions focuses on polymer-based integrated solutions for medical and life science; and Sealing Solutions focuses on polymer-based critical sealing solutions and components used in aerospace, automotive and diversified industrials.[32]

Using 2024 business-area net sales before intersegment eliminations, Sealing Solutions was the largest segment at about 48% of combined business-area sales (SEK 16,670m), Industrial Solutions accounted for about 44% (SEK 15,317m), and Medical Solutions accounted for about 9% (SEK 3,003m).[33][34] Trelleborg also has a recent change in segmentation: the company states that Medical Solutions was created as a new business area in April 2024, carved out of the healthcare & medical operations previously included within Sealing Solutions.[35][36] In the prior structure disclosed for 2023, Trelleborg reported two main business areas—Industrial Solutions and Sealing Solutions—with Sealing Solutions explicitly including healthcare & medical; on that basis, Sealing Solutions represented about 55% of combined business-area sales and Industrial Solutions about 45%.[37] [31]

Company history

Production began in Trelleborg in 1896, and in 1905 Henry Dunker and Johan Kock founded Trelleborgs Gummifabriks AB, establishing the business that grew from a local rubber producer into a broader industrial company [40][41]. A major phase of internationalization started in the 1950s; Trelleborg notes that only 4% of sales were outside Sweden in 1950, with overseas expansion accelerating over the following decades [40]. The company’s shares have been listed since 1964 [12].

During the 1990s, Trelleborg reshaped its portfolio through a mix of divestments and targeted acquisitions, including the purchase of roofing company Trebolit in 1998 and sealing-profile producer DiPro Dichtungssysteme in 1999 [42]. In 2003, it agreed to acquire Smiths Group’s polymer-based precision seals business, a major step in expanding its engineered polymer and sealing operations [45]. In 2012, Trelleborg and Freudenberg completed the formation of the 50/50 antivibration joint venture TrelleborgVibracoustic [46]. More recently, another major portfolio change came in 2023 when Trelleborg completed the divestment of Trelleborg Wheel Systems, continuing the long-running restructuring of the group around more focused industrial niches [47].
