Business segments

Tractor Supply reports one business segment: the retail sale of products that support the rural lifestyle. It represents 100% of reported net sales. Tractor Supply and Petsense by Tractor Supply are retail banners, not separately reported segments, and the company does not disclose a sales percentage for each banner.[23][21]

Within that segment, fiscal 2025 net sales were divided among five product categories: Livestock, Equine & Agriculture (27%; feed, equipment, fencing and related supplies); Companion Animal (24%; pet food, supplies and wellness); Seasonal & Recreation (24%; lawn and garden, power equipment and recreation); Truck, Tool & Hardware (15%); and Clothing, Gift & Décor (10%). These are merchandise-category shares, not additional reportable segments.[24][23] [23]

Company history

Tractor Supply Company began in 1938, when Charles E. Schmidt Sr. started selling tractor parts by mail. By 1940, the business had grown into a retail store in Minot, North Dakota. The company completed an initial public offering in 1994.[25][26]

As its retail network expanded, Tractor Supply acquired Del’s Farm Supply in 2005 and opened its 1,000th store in 2011. It acquired pet retailer Petsense in 2016, extending its business into specialty pet stores. The company opened its 2,000th Tractor Supply store in 2021 and acquired Orscheln Farm and Home in 2022, adding stores to its rural retail network.[27] [25]
