Overview
Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc. is a Japan-based insurance holding company whose group provides property and casualty (non-life) and life insurance. Its principal businesses are Japanese non-life insurance, Japanese life insurance and international insurance. Group offerings span personal and commercial coverage, including property, motor, marine, liability, accident and health, and specialty risks.[1][2][3]
The group traces its origins to 1879, while Tokio Marine Holdings was established in 2002. It operates across 57 countries and regions and had approximately 51,000 employees as of March 31, 2025. For the fiscal year ended March 2025, it reported ¥5.3 trillion in net premiums written. Products & services
Tokio Marine Holdings’ Japanese property-and-casualty products include automobile, home and fire, personal accident, marine, and commercial insurance. Tokio Marine & Nichido’s Total Assist automobile policy combines liability, personal-injury and vehicle coverage, with services such as roadside and accident assistance. Its Total Assist home policy covers buildings or contents against selected risks including fire, storms, theft and water damage; earthquake coverage is separate. Commercial offerings include liability, construction, workers’ compensation and cargo insurance.[6][7][8][9]
Through Tokio Marine Nichido Anshin Life, the group offers medical, cancer, death-benefit and income-protection policies. Examples include Medical Kit NEO, which covers hospitalization and surgery; Anshin Cancer Treatment Insurance, which covers qualifying cancer treatments; and Family Income Protection Term Insurance NEO. Its overseas specialty products include Tokio Marine HCC’s NetGuard Plus cyber policy, which combines first- and third-party coverage with services such as vulnerability monitoring and phishing simulations, and its maritime-piracy cover, which offers access to crisis-response consultants.[10][11][12][13][14]
For fiscal 2024, automobile insurance generated ¥1,174.1 billion, or approximately 47%, of Tokio Marine & Nichido’s ¥2,518.8 billion in net premiums written. Fire insurance contributed approximately 18%, followed by personal accident at 8%, compulsory automobile liability at 8% and marine at 4%. Geographic presence
Tokio Marine Holdings is headquartered in Tokyo and operates in Japan and 56 countries and regions worldwide. Its international presence spans North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and other markets. The company identifies Brazil and Thailand as established markets outside Japan.[1][17][18][19]
North America is the largest contributor to its international business, accounting for roughly 80% of overseas profit. In FY2024, reported non-life gross written premiums by region were ¥2,329.0 billion in North America, ¥304.8 billion in South and Central America, ¥291.7 billion in Asia and Oceania, ¥255.6 billion in Europe, and ¥46.7 billion in the Middle East and Africa. Tokio Marine Holdings reports four business segments: **Domestic non-life insurance**, **Domestic life insurance**, **International insurance**, and **Financial and other businesses**. Domestic non-life is centered on Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance in Japan, with motor and fire insurance among its lines. Domestic life is centered on Tokio Marine Nichido Life Insurance. International insurance encompasses overseas operations, including Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Delphi Financial Group and Tokio Marine HCC, with activities across North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and other regions. Company history
Tokio Marine traces its origins to the establishment of Tokio Marine Insurance Company in 1879. It began underwriting directly in London, Paris and New York in 1880, and introduced automobile insurance in Japan in 1914.[31][32]
The present holding company was established in 2002 as Millea Holdings, bringing Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance and Nichido Fire & Marine Insurance under common ownership. The two insurers merged in 2004 to form Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, and Millea adopted the name Tokio Marine Holdings in 2008.[33][34] The group subsequently expanded through acquisitions, completing its purchases of Philadelphia Consolidated in 2008, Delphi Financial in 2012, HCC Insurance Holdings in 2015 and the PURE insurance group in 2020.[35][36][37][38] [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]
