Overview

Toast, Inc. is a Boston-based restaurant technology company whose cloud-based platform combines point-of-sale software, digital ordering, payment processing, restaurant-grade hardware and tools for managing staff, inventory, marketing and finances. Its mission is to empower the restaurant community to delight guests and thrive.[1]

Incorporated in 2011, Toast serves restaurants in the United States and several international markets, including Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Australia. At the end of 2025, it had approximately 164,000 live locations and 6,500 employees worldwide. Revenue for 2025 was $6.153 billion.[4] [1]

Products & services

Toast’s restaurant point-of-sale products connect fixed terminals, handheld devices and self-service kiosks with integrated payment processing. Its Kitchen Display System and kitchen printers bring in-store and online orders into kitchen workflows. Toast also sells terminals, tablets, handhelds and accessories, and provides installation, configuration and training services.[9][10]

For off-premise sales, Toast offers direct online ordering, restaurant websites and branded apps, and delivery services. Its guest-facing products include Toast Marketing for targeted email and text campaigns, Toast Loyalty for rewards, and physical and digital gift cards. Workforce tools include Toast Payroll, which syncs POS hours, tips and employee data, and scheduling tools for shift management and team communication. xtraCHEF by Toast provides invoice automation, inventory management, recipe costing and food-cost reporting.[11]

Toast’s financial technology offerings principally comprise transaction-based payment processing and Toast Capital, which markets and services working-capital loans originated by a bank partner. In 2025, financial technology solutions accounted for approximately 82% of revenue, software subscriptions 15%, and hardware and professional services together 3%; these are revenue categories rather than sales figures for individual named products.[15] [9]

Geographic presence

Toast’s revenue is concentrated in the United States: the company reported no material revenue from any other individual country in 2025, 2024 or 2023. It does not disclose a numerical revenue breakdown by country or region. Toast identifies the United States as its core market and describes international expansion as a longer-term initiative. Its developer documentation lists Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States as operating markets.[19]

Toast identifies significant operations in the United States, Ireland and India. At year-end 2025, its $132 million of long-lived assets comprised $115 million in the United States, $4 million in Ireland, $9 million in India and $4 million elsewhere. Its principal executive office is at 333 Summer Street in Boston, Massachusetts; it also leases offices elsewhere in North America, Europe and Asia. The cited disclosures do not provide an employee count by location.[19] [19]

Business segments

Toast reports **one operating and reportable segment**. Its chief executive officer evaluates performance and allocates resources using consolidated financial information, so the company does not report separate financial results for its product lines.[24]

Within that segment, Toast reports three revenue categories. In 2025, **financial technology solutions**—primarily transaction-based payment-processing fees, as well as fees from marketing and servicing working-capital loans through Toast Capital—accounted for approximately **82%** of revenue. **Subscription services**, which provide access to Toast’s software applications, contributed approximately **15%**. **Hardware and professional services**, including devices, installation, configuration and training, contributed approximately **3%**. These are revenue categories, not separately reported segments.[25] [24]

Company history

Toast was founded in 2011 by Steve Fredette, Aman Narang and Jonathan Grimm. After initially developing mobile-payment technology, the company introduced a restaurant point-of-sale platform in 2013. Chris Comparato became CEO in 2015.[30][31]

Toast expanded beyond point-of-sale software with the launch of Toast Capital, a restaurant financing offering, in 2019. In 2021, it acquired xtraCHEF to add back-office tools and completed an initial public offering. It subsequently acquired Sling in 2022 for employee scheduling and team-management capabilities and Delphi Display Systems in 2023 for drive-thru and digital-display technology. Co-founder Narang succeeded Comparato as CEO in January 2024.[32] [30]
