Company profile

TGS ASA

Updated

Overview

TGS ASA is an energy-data and technology company that provides data and intelligence to support decisions across the energy value chain. Its core business includes a global multi-client data library—spanning seismic and other geophysical data, well and production information—and related acquisition, imaging, software and data-management services. Its offerings also extend to data for areas such as wind and carbon storage.[1] The company is headquartered in Oslo, with its primary subsidiary in Houston and offices across Europe, the Americas, Australia and other markets; its reported revenue spans North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.[1][4]

TGS describes its purpose as driving data-driven solutions for the energy industry.[5] In FY2025, it reported revenue of USD 1,526.9 million and a global workforce of 1,765.[6][7] [1]

Products & services

TGS’s products include a non-exclusive multi-client geoscience data library that customers license for subsurface analysis. It covers seismic data alongside gravity, magnetic, seep, geothermal, controlled-source electromagnetic, multibeam, well, coring, digital-log and production data, as well as wind, carbon capture and storage, and other renewable-energy data. Seismic offerings include 2D and 3D surveys, GeoStreamer and GeoStreamer X, multi-azimuth and multi-component data, MegaSurvey 3D, and ocean-bottom-node (OBN) data. TGS describes OBN data as full-azimuth, long-offset and multicomponent; its MASS/ZNodal systems are designed for water depths from shallow water to 4,000 metres.[8]

Related services include marine data acquisition, seismic processing, reprocessing, imaging and interpretation. TGS’s Imaging AnyWare® software supports seismic processing and imaging in cloud or on-premises environments. Its Facies Map Browser products provide interpreted borehole stratigraphy, depositional facies and environment maps, wireline logs and geological data; FMB Cloud offers web access and FMB Connect API access. Digital products include the searchable TGS Data Verse catalog, myTGS, TGS Projects and Wind AXIOM. For offshore wind, TGS offers solar-powered floating LiDAR buoys for wind and metocean measurement, offshore-wind data and analytics, and the Measurement Data Ecosystem for standardized data ingestion and workflows.[12]

For 2025, reported segment revenues were approximately $899.5 million for Multi-client, $482.8 million for Marine Data Acquisition, $53.1 million for New Energy Solutions and $71.8 million for Imaging.[20] [8]

Geographic presence

TGS ASA’s FY2025 revenue was reported by region, rather than by individual customer country. North America, including its separately reported onshore revenue, accounted for USD 361.4 million (23.7%); Europe USD 308.0 million (20.2%); Africa and Middle East USD 359.8 million (23.6%); Latin America USD 287.3 million (18.8%); and Asia Pacific USD 210.4 million (13.8%), out of total revenue of USD 1,526.9 million. Percentages are calculated from the reported regional amounts.[4]

TGS lists Oslo, Norway, as its headquarters and Houston, Texas, as the base of its primary subsidiary. Its named regional offices include London, Rio de Janeiro, Perth, Calgary, Norwich and Fredrikstad, alongside additional country offices linked to project and sales activity. At year-end 2025, the company reported 1,765 employees: 496 in the United States, 459 in Singapore, 372 in Norway and 259 in the United Kingdom; 565 employees were working offshore.[1][7]

The company describes its seismic data library as having modern 3D coverage in significant offshore hydrocarbon provinces worldwide.[9] [4]

Business segments

TGS’s 2025 annual segment reporting comprised Multi-client, Marine Data Acquisition, New Energy Solutions, Imaging, and Shared services. Based on produced revenue of $1,509.6 million, their approximate contributions were 59.6% ($899.5m), 32.0% ($482.8m), 3.5% ($53.1m), 4.8% ($71.8m), and 0.2% ($2.3m), respectively. These percentages are calculated from the annual segment table; produced revenue is the management reporting basis and differs from IFRS revenue [20][21]. Multi-client initiates, acquires, processes, markets, and sells energy data to multiple customers on a non-exclusive basis [22]. Marine Data Acquisition provides data-acquisition services, while Imaging processes seismic data for external customers and other TGS businesses [23][24].

In Q1 2026, TGS reported four business units: Multi-client, Marine Data Acquisition, Imaging, and Other. Under the updated structure, site-characterization surveys moved into Marine Data Acquisition; Other includes Shared Services and the remaining New Energy Solutions activities [25]. Marine Data Acquisition manages vessels and ocean-bottom-node inventory and acquires streamer, site-characterization, and OBN data for external customers and TGS Multi-client [26]. Other encompasses shared support and corporate functions alongside the remaining New Energy Solutions activities [27]. [20]

Company history

TGS was founded in Houston in 1981, developing a multi-client seismic library; NOPEC, founded in Oslo the same year, built a North Sea data library. NOPEC listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1997, and in 1998 merged with TGS-Calibre Geophysical Company to form TGS-NOPEC.[28][29] In 2002, TGS acquired A2D Technologies, adding digital well data to its business, and in 2012 acquired Arcis Seismic Solutions to expand its onshore operations.[30][31]

The company acquired Spectrum in 2019, combining its multi-client seismic portfolios with TGS’s, and in 2021 adopted the name TGS ASA; that year it also acquired offshore-wind intelligence provider 4C Offshore.[32] TGS acquired Magseis Fairfield in January 2023, adding ocean-bottom-node seismic capabilities. In July 2024, its merger with PGS was completed, bringing the companies’ energy-data and geophysical acquisition businesses together.[35][36] [28]
