Tesla, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Tesla, Inc. operates in the electric-vehicle and clean-energy sectors. Its two reported business segments are automotive and energy generation and storage: it makes electric vehicles and related services, as well as energy products including Powerwall, Megapack, solar panels, and Solar Roof.[1] Tesla states its mission as “building a world of amazing abundance,” and describes a focus on solar energy, batteries, and electric vehicles.[6][7]

Tesla has manufacturing facilities in the United States, China, and Germany and a global retail, service, and charging footprint.[8][9] For scale, it reported $94.827 billion in revenue for FY2025 and 134,785 employees as of December 31, 2025.[10][11] [1]

Products & services

Tesla’s vehicle products include Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles, Model S and Model X, the Cybertruck pickup, and the Tesla Semi commercial truck. Tesla describes Model Y as a compact SUV based on the Model 3 platform that can seat up to seven; Model X also seats up to seven, while Cybertruck combines pickup utility with a stainless-steel exterior. Tesla reported early production and deliveries of the Semi. Its driver-assistance offering includes FSD (Supervised), which requires driver supervision, and its Robotaxi ride-hailing service launched in June 2025.[3]

Tesla’s energy products include Powerwall, a lithium-ion battery for homes and small commercial facilities, and Megapack, a storage system for commercial, industrial, utility and energy-generation customers that can be combined into gigawatt-hour-scale installations. It also sells solar panels and Solar Roof generating glass tiles, with solar products designed to integrate with Powerwall. The company introduced Megapack 3 and Megablock as next-generation industrial storage products and began customer deliveries of a residential retrofit solar panel in January 2026.[4]

Related services include Supercharger access and network operations, vehicle repair and maintenance, collision repair, insurance, used-vehicle sales, energy-system installation and service, solar power-purchase agreements, and grid services through virtual power plants. In FY2025, Tesla reported revenue of $69.526 billion from automotive, $12.771 billion from energy generation and storage, and $12.530 billion from services and other—approximately 73.3%, 13.5%, and 13.2% of total revenue, respectively. Tesla does not report revenue by individual vehicle model.[9] [3]

Geographic presence

Tesla’s facilities support manufacturing and assembly, warehousing, engineering, retail and service, Supercharger, administrative, and sales activities across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with its principal executive office at 1 Tesla Road, Austin; its filing describes administrative and sales offices but does not provide a complete list of their locations.[20][21]

Tesla’s major manufacturing and factory locations include Austin, Texas; Fremont and Lathrop, California; Sparks, Nevada; Buffalo, New York; Grünheide, Germany; and Shanghai, China. Tesla’s filing identifies the Shanghai facilities as owned buildings on land held under 50-year land-use rights.[22][23]

A secondary geographic-revenue compilation estimates FY2025 revenue at $47.63 billion in the United States (about 50.2%), $20.96 billion in China (22.1%), and $26.24 billion in other countries (27.7%); these figures are not a geographic breakdown from Tesla’s cited filing.[24] Tesla reported 134,785 employees worldwide at year-end 2025, without a regional employee breakdown in the cited disclosure.[25] [20]

Business segments

Tesla reports two operating and reportable segments: **Automotive**, covering electric-vehicle design, development, manufacturing, sales and leasing, as well as regulatory credits and services and other; and **Energy generation and storage**, covering energy products and related services, leasing, financing, and generation incentives.[26][2]

For FY2025, Automotive generated $82.056 billion, approximately **86.5%** of Tesla’s $94.827 billion in total revenue; Energy generation and storage generated $12.771 billion, approximately **13.5%**. Percentages are calculated from reported segment revenue and total revenue.[27] Tesla also discloses revenue categories such as automotive sales, regulatory credits, leasing, and services and other; these are revenue lines within the Automotive segment, not additional reportable segments.[26][27] The two-segment structure is also reflected in Tesla’s latest available interim reporting, for the six months ended June 30, 2026.[28][29] [26]

Company history

Tesla, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware on July 1, 2003, by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning; Elon Musk and JB Straubel were also part of the company’s early founding team.[30][31] Tesla began regular production of its first vehicle, the Roadster, in March 2008. Musk became CEO in October that year.[32][33]

The company began Model S customer deliveries in June 2012 and broke ground on its Nevada Gigafactory in 2014. Model X deliveries began in 2015; in 2016, Tesla completed its acquisition of SolarCity, expanding into solar energy and energy storage.[34]

Tesla handed over its first Model 3 vehicles in 2017. It began Model 3 production at its Shanghai factory in 2019, followed by Model Y production and deliveries in 2020. In 2022, production ramps began at its Berlin-Brandenburg and Austin facilities, extending the company’s manufacturing footprint beyond California, Nevada and Shanghai.[38] [30]
