Terumo Corporation is a Japan-based medical technology company founded in 1921 to manufacture clinical thermometers. Its mission is “Contributing to Society through Healthcare.” Today, its businesses span cardiovascular and vascular treatments, hospital and home-care products, and technologies for collecting and processing blood and cells.[1][2][3]

Products & services
Terumo’s cardiovascular and interventional products include RADIFOCUS Glidewire Advantage guidewires, which combine a hydrophilic distal segment for navigation with a stiffer proximal shaft for device support, and Glidesheath Slender radial introducer sheaths, whose thin walls reduce the outside diameter while preserving the inner diameter. Its Ultimaster family comprises sirolimus-eluting coronary stents. For other vascular procedures, Terumo supplies CAPIOX hollow-fiber oxygenators for cardiopulmonary bypass and Thoraflex Hybrid aortic prostheses, which combine a surgical graft with a stent-graft section. Neurovascular products include the WEB intrasaccular device for endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
Hospital-care products include disposable syringes, infusion pumps and infusion lines. The Terumo Syringe has a transparent graduated barrel and a siliconized plunger; the Terufusion SS3 is a syringe pump for controlled drug delivery. For pharmaceutical customers, Terumo offers PLAJEX cyclic-olefin-polymer prefillable syringes and contract development and manufacturing services, including sterile fill-finish for injectable medicines and drug-device combinations.[13][14][15][16]
Terumo’s blood and cell technologies include TERUFLEX systems for whole-blood collection, component processing and storage; the Spectra Optia apheresis system, which uses continuous-flow centrifugation and optical detection for blood-component separation and cell collection; and Quantum Flex, an automated, functionally closed cell-expansion platform using hollow-fiber perfusion.[17][18][19] [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]
Geographic presence
Terumo is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and sells products in more than 160 countries and regions.[20][21] In the year ended March 31, 2025, the Americas accounted for about 38% of consolidated revenue (¥395.7 billion), followed by Europe at 21% (¥218.3 billion), Japan at 21% (¥217.2 billion), Asia and others at 12% (¥120.1 billion), and China at 8% (¥85.0 billion). These figures classify sales by customer location, rather than by where products are made.[22]
Terumo’s geographic footprint also includes manufacturing subsidiaries in the United States and Belgium. Terumo reports three business segments. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, Cardiac and Vascular generated approximately 60% of consolidated revenue, Medical Care Solutions 20%, and Blood and Cell Technologies 19%.[25]
Cardiac and Vascular covers devices for interventional, neurovascular, cardiovascular-surgery and aortic procedures, including catheters, guidewires, stents, oxygenators and vascular grafts. Medical Care Solutions spans hospital products such as syringes and infusion systems, life-care products such as glucose-monitoring and insulin-delivery devices, and pharmaceutical solutions such as prefillable syringes. Blood and Cell Technologies supplies products for blood collection and processing, apheresis, plasma donation and cell therapies.[3][21] [26][26][26][27][28][28][25][3][21]
Company history
Terumo was founded in Tokyo in 1921 as Red Line Thermometer Corporation by a group of medical scientists led by Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato. It began by manufacturing clinical thermometers, then expanded into other medical products, launching Japan’s first disposable syringe in 1963 and its first blood bag in 1969.[1][29]
Acquisitions broadened Terumo’s operations in the 2000s: it acquired Vascutek in 2002 and MicroVention in 2006, expanding its cardiovascular and neurovascular businesses. In 2011, it completed the acquisition of CaridianBCT, extending its blood-management business.[30][31] [1][29][30][31]
