Company history
Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in November 1998 by Ma Huateng (Pony Ma), Zhang Zhidong, Chen Yidan, Xu Chenye and Zeng Liqing. Its messaging service, initially called OICQ and later QQ, launched in February 1999, establishing the company’s early consumer internet business.[22][23][24]
Tencent expanded beyond messaging in the early 2000s: it began developing online games in 2003 and launched QQ.com that year, followed by Qzone in 2005. Its shares began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on June 16, 2004.[25][26]
In 2011, Tencent launched Weixin, later known internationally as WeChat, and agreed to acquire a majority stake in game developer Riot Games. Weixin Pay followed in 2013; in 2014, Tencent formed a strategic partnership with JD.com that included an equity investment.[27][28][29]
Tencent expanded its international games interests with the acquisition of a majority interest in Supercell in 2016. In 2017, Weixin introduced Mini Programs, adding lightweight applications and services to its platform.[30][31] [S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8][S9][S10][https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2004/0607/0700/ewp113.pdf][https://www.tencent.com/who-we-are/our-team/][https://www.tencent.com/products/qq/][https://static.www.tencent.com/storage/uploads/2019/11/09/d530cf0097fd788ce2ff5d0583e6dcb4.pdf][https://www.tencent.com/en-us/articles/1600069.html][https://static.www.tencent.com/uploads/2025/11/13/3454372b79d12fd82a05d8ac087bd37b.pdf][https://static.www.tencent.com/storage/uploads/2019/11/09/7b7a52dbf0616864e5e25ff354b28aca.pdf][https://static.www.tencent.com/storage/uploads/2019/11/09/e48025ca3130e225fc2b47af2dde6c5a.pdf][https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2016/0621/ltn20160621350.pdf][https://static.www.tencent.com/storage/uploads/2019/11/09/782ebfec11492a2dbbce9401b1334905.pdf]
