Overview
Talos Energy Inc. is an independent energy company focused on offshore oil and natural-gas exploration and production, with operations primarily in the U.S. Gulf of America and offshore Mexico. Its products include oil, natural gas and natural-gas liquids.[1][2] Talos states its mission as “Providing energy prosperity to improve lives,” with a focus on secure, responsible and affordable energy.[3]
Talos was founded in 2012.[4] For the year ended December 31, 2025, it reported total revenue of approximately $1.78 billion.[2] [1][2][3][4][3][4]
Products & services
Talos’s products are crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs), sold primarily under short-term, market-based contracts. Its oil sales include barrels marketed in the Eugene Island Crude, Louisiana Light Sweet Crude and Heavy Louisiana Sweet Crude markets.[5][6]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, oil accounted for approximately 90.5% of revenue, natural gas 7.4% and NGLs 2.1%.[7] Talos’s operating capabilities include offshore production and processing: at the company-operated Tarantula facility, gross processing capacity reached approximately 38 Mboepd in the fourth quarter of 2025.[8] Its operations are primarily in deepwater, which it defines as water depths greater than 600 feet.[1] [5][6][7][7][7][7][8][1]
Geographic presence
Talos Energy’s operations are concentrated in the U.S. Gulf of America, including deepwater, Shelf and Gulf Coast areas, and offshore Mexico. Its U.S. activity includes the Central Gulf and named assets in Mississippi Canyon; in Mexico, the company’s Block 7/Zama Unit Area is in the Sureste Basin, in shallow water off Tabasco.[9][10][11][12]
For 2025, reported U.S. production was 31,047 MBoe from Deepwater and 3,487 MBoe from Shelf & Gulf Coast—about 90% and 10%, respectively, of U.S. production. The cited reporting gives no revenue split by geography.[13]
As of December 31, 2025, approximately 700 employees were located primarily in Texas, Louisiana and Mexico; about 400 worked in offshore operations, and seven Mexican nationals worked in Mexico. The company’s listed corporate headquarters is in Houston, Texas.[14][15]
In 2026, Talos reported selling a further 30.1% interest in TEM 7 and agreed to farm into Block 29 in the Salinas-Sureste Basin, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. It also agreed to acquire interests in producing Na Kika and Coulomb assets in Mississippi Canyon; that acquisition was pending at the time reported.[16][17][18][19] [9][10][11][12][13][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][15]
Business segments
Talos Energy reports one operating and reportable segment: **Upstream**, encompassing exploration and production of oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. Its activities are focused on the U.S. Gulf of America and offshore Mexico, with its U.S. Gulf operations primarily in deepwater (water depths greater than 600 feet).[20][1]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Upstream generated $1,137.1 million in external-customer revenue, representing 100% of reported segment revenue, and recorded a net loss of $106.1 million.[21] Talos does not report segment assets because they are not reviewed by its chief operating decision maker.[22] CCS was reported alongside Upstream only for a portion of 2024; it is not part of the current segment structure.[23] [20][1][21][22][23]
Company history
Talos Energy was formed in 2012 with backing from Apollo and Riverstone; its co-founders included Timothy S. Duncan and Stephen Heitzman. In 2013, it acquired Helix’s Energy Resource Technology Gulf of Mexico business, establishing a significant producing-asset base.[24][25][26] In 2015, a Talos-led consortium was awarded an offshore Mexico contract, and the group announced the Zama oil discovery in 2017.[11][27]
In 2018, Talos completed its combination with Stone Energy and began trading on the NYSE as TALO; it also acquired Whistler Energy II that year. The company continued expanding its Gulf of Mexico portfolio with acquisitions announced in 2019 and completed in 2020.[28][29][30][31] Talos acquired deepwater operator EnVen in 2023 and QuarterNorth Energy in 2024; in 2023 it also sold a 49.9% interest in Talos Mexico to Zamajal.[32][33][34] After Duncan stepped down as CEO in 2024, Paul Goodfellow was appointed president and CEO effective March 2025. In September 2026, Talos completed a further Gulf of America deepwater asset acquisition from Shell and a Ridgewood affiliate.[35][36][37]
