TAL Education Group

Updated

Overview

TAL Education Group is an education and learning-solutions company whose businesses began in 2005 with K–12 tutoring in China. It now reports two principal business lines: learning services and other offerings, and learning content solutions. Its products include print and digital learning materials, books incorporating digital learning, learning devices and mobile applications, including some AI-enabled features.[1][2]

China remains the company’s principal market, while TAL also serves selected overseas markets. Following changes to China’s education policies, it ceased K–9 academic after-school tutoring in mainland China at the end of 2021; its current filing describes academic tutoring in select age groups and countries or regions where permitted. TAL states its aspiration as “empower life-long growth with love and technology.” [1]

For fiscal 2026, TAL reported net revenue of US$3,008.9 million.[5] [1]

Products & services

TAL Education Group’s products include learning services, learning-content products and technology solutions. Its learning services include Xueersi Peiyou small classes, personalized premium after-school one-to-one instruction, and online courses. It also offers enrichment programs in Science and Creativity, Coding and Programming, and Humanities and Aesthetics, designed for different ages and interest levels. The company says it does not currently offer K–9 Academic AST Services in mainland China; permitted academic services are available to select age groups in certain other countries and regions.[6]

Learning-content products include print books, smart books, mobile apps and AI-driven learning devices. TAL describes some content as combining learning materials with digital experiences and intelligent learning tools. Its teaching technology includes intelligent-classroom interactions, automatically generated feedback and tailored improvement recommendations, as well as infrastructure for online live instruction through PCs and apps. The company also develops technology solutions and subscription- or consumption-based SaaS for learning institutions and technology service providers.[2]

For the fiscal year ended February 28, 2026, learning services and others generated $1,947.0 million, or about 64.7% of net revenue, while learning-content solutions generated $1,062.0 million, or about 35.3%. TAL does not report revenue shares for individual named products or courses. As an operating indicator, it reported 2.0 million weekly active learning-device units in the last natural week of February 2026.[14][15] [6]

Geographic presence

TAL Education Group’s operations and sales are concentrated in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), where substantially all of its revenue is generated. Its FY2026 report does not provide a country-by-country revenue breakdown or quantify revenue from overseas markets.[16][17]

The company’s principal executive office is in Changping District, Beijing. As of February 28, 2026, its branch offices were primarily located across 45 cities in China; the report does not list those cities or provide an employee distribution by location. TAL reports that it has entered overseas markets, but does not specify them, and its Hong Kong subsidiaries conduct no substantive business activities. A substantial majority of its long-lived assets are located in the PRC.[18] [16]

Business segments

TAL Education Group reports one operating and reportable segment; “learning services and others” and “learning content solutions” are revenue categories, not separate reportable segments.[17]

For FY2026, ended February 28, 2026, learning services and others generated US$1.947 billion, approximately 64.7% of net revenue.[14] Learning content solutions generated US$1.062 billion, approximately 35.3%, out of total net revenue of US$3.009 billion.[14] Learning services include Xueersi Peiyou small classes, personalized premium services and online courses, as well as enrichment offerings such as science and creativity, coding and programming, and humanities and aesthetics.[6][7] Learning content solutions include print books, books with digital learning experiences, learning devices and mobile apps, using internally developed or sourced and licensed content.[2] [17]

Company history

TAL Education Group was founded in 2003 as Xueersi by Bangxin Zhang. It completed an initial public offering in 2010, listing American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange.[20]

In 2013, the company broadened its group identity beyond the Xueersi brand, which continued to be used for its small-class math and science business. TAL expanded through acquisitions, including Firstleap Education, for which it announced an acquisition agreement in 2015, and coding-education company CodeMonkey in 2018.[23]

China’s 2021 “Double Reduction” policy imposed restrictions on academic tutoring for compulsory-education students. In November that year, TAL said it planned to end mainland China K–9 academic tutoring by the end of December and develop business beyond those services. Its subsequent business development included learning content in print and digital formats, devices, apps, and AI-driven features.[26] [20]
