SYDBANK

Updated

Overview

Sydbank is a Danish full-service bank serving personal, business and Private Banking customers with services that include payments and deposits, lending, investment, pensions and financial advice. Its core market is Denmark, with a branch network that also includes locations in Germany.[1]

Since 8 December 2025, Sydbank has been part of AL Sydbank, formed by the merger of Sydbank, Arbejdernes Landsbank and Vestjysk Bank. The combined group’s stated focus includes building long-term customer relationships and providing value-adding advice.[4][5]

As scale indicators for the merged group, AL Sydbank reported total income of DKK 3,005 million for the first quarter of 2026. Its 2025 annual report recorded 2,531 employees, or 2,267 full-time equivalents, at year-end; the figures reflect the post-merger reporting entity and should not be read as Sydbank-only measures.[6] [4]

Products & services

SYDBANK offers retail banking products including accounts and savings, cards, payment services, and loans such as car loans and overdraft credit. Housing-finance offerings include AL Sydbank Hjem, Bolig Frihed and Sydbank Boligkøb, alongside mortgage loans offered through partner arrangements.[8]

Its digital services include the Sydbank Privat app and online banking for transfers, bill and recurring payments, account and card overviews, budgets, savings and investments; access can use Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. Business customers can use Online Banking and MobilBank Erhverv for account and payment services, including phone-based payment approvals, and access business cards, MobilePay and other payment solutions.[11]

Business financing includes operating credit, investment loans, guarantees, mortgage loans and leasing for vehicles, industrial machinery and agricultural machinery. Trade-finance services include export finance, letters of credit, guarantees, collections and foreign-currency services. Investment and savings products include Sydbank’s Puljer, Sydinvest funds, Sydinvest Blandede Fonde and Aktiesparekonto; pension offerings include ratepension, lifelong annuity and aldersopsparing. The bank also provides investment advice, portfolio management and research, while Sydbank Markets offers Scandinavian equity trading and market-making, futures and options, and sales-trading in international equities and derivatives.[16]

The FY2025 report describes green lending under the Bank’s Green Bond Framework, while noting these products were not EU Taxonomy-aligned because the Bank had not assessed the relevant “do no significant harm” criteria. The sources reviewed do not provide product-level revenue or performance contribution percentages.[25][26] [25]

Geographic presence

SYDBANK’s latest full-year geographic disclosures are for 2025. The report identifies banking and leasing operations in Denmark and banking operations in Germany. Denmark accounted for DKK 7,153 million, approximately 95.2% of reported turnover, and Germany DKK 358 million, approximately 4.8%. The reported employee counts were 4,104 in Denmark and 76 in Germany, about 98.2% and 1.8% of the combined 4,180, respectively.[27]

At the end of Q2 2026, AL Sydbank had 88 branches in Denmark and three in Germany, following the merger of 52 branches during the half-year. Its German branches are in Flensburg, Kiel and Hamburg.[28][29] [27]

Business segments

The 2025 annual report identifies five business units: Banking, Asset Management, AL Sydbank Markets, Treasury and Other. Banking serves retail and corporate clients. For FY2025, Banking generated DKK 6,521 million of total income, approximately 87.8% of the group’s DKK 7,430 million total.[30] Asset Management, with income primarily related to advisory activities and investment funds, generated DKK 525 million, approximately 7.1%.[33][32] AL Sydbank Markets, which includes trading income and income from customers assigned to it for services such as advisory and administration, generated DKK 384 million, approximately 5.2%.[33][32] These percentages are calculated from reported FY2025 total income, rather than reported as percentages by the company.

Treasury reflects the group return on positions managed by Treasury, including liquidity allocation. Other includes non-recurring items, Group Executive Management costs and returns on strategic shareholdings not assigned to Banking or Markets. The FY2025 segment table does not show separate total-income amounts for Treasury or Other, so their contributions cannot be calculated on the same basis.[34][32] [30]

Company history

Sydbank was founded in 1970 through the merger of four Southern Jutland banks: Den Nordslesvigske Folkebank, Folkebanken for Als og Sundeved, Graasten Bank and Tønder Landmandsbank. It expanded through further combinations in the 1980s and 1990s, including Århus Bank, Fynske Bank, Sparekassen Sønderjylland, Varde Bank and Aktivbanken; it also opened its first German branch, in Flensburg, in 1984.[35][36]

Sydbank continued expanding through acquisitions and mergers, including Egnsbank Fyn in 2002, bankTrelleborg in 2008, Tønder Bank’s activities in 2012 and DiBa Bank in 2013.[35] It agreed to acquire Alm. Brand Bank in 2020, and its acquisition of Coop Bank took effect on 1 July 2024.[39][40] In December 2025, Sydbank merged with Arbejdernes Landsbank and Vestjysk Bank, becoming AL Sydbank; Sydbank was the surviving legal entity.[41][42] [43]
