Overview

Sweco is a European architecture and engineering consultancy, providing expertise across buildings and urban areas, water, energy and industry, and transport infrastructure. Its stated purpose is “Transforming society together,” working with clients on societal challenges including urbanisation, digitalisation and sustainability.[1][2]

The company operates across around 15 European markets through eight geographic business areas, and also undertakes projects worldwide.[3] Sweco reported FY2025 net sales of SEK 31.6 billion [4] and described its workforce as 23,000 architects, engineers and other experts in its H1 2026 report.[5] Its Q1 2026 filing reported 21,836 full-time employees.[6] [4]

Products & services

Sweco provides multidisciplinary consulting services rather than primarily selling manufactured products. Its Buildings & Urban Areas services cover planning and design for new and existing buildings and urban environments, combining architecture, engineering and environmental expertise. The work includes energy-efficient systems, emissions reduction, circular materials and climate adaptation. This segment represented 38% of 2025 net sales.[7]

Water, Energy & Industry represented 35% of 2025 net sales and includes consulting for water and wastewater systems, urban water management and flood protection, as well as renewable energy, electricity transmission and distribution, energy efficiency, hydrogen and carbon capture. Services extend from early studies and strategic advice through design, implementation and optimisation. Transportation Infrastructure represented 27% of net sales; its services span roads, railways, public transport, ports and urban mobility, including early studies, permitting, detailed design, site supervision and project management.[11]

The segment percentages are rounded shares of 2025 net sales, not a split of branded-product sales. Sweco’s work is commonly delivered through fixed-price or time-and-materials projects.[7] [7]

Geographic presence

Sweco’s 2025 reporting describes eight geographic business areas: Sweden; Norway; Finland and Estonia; Denmark; the Netherlands; Belgium and Luxembourg; the UK and Ireland; and Germany, Lithuania and Poland. The company describes its presence as spanning around 15 European markets, with projects worldwide.[18][19]

For 2025, reported external net sales were SEK 9,285 million in Sweden, 3,525 million in Norway, 3,544 million in Finland, 3,322 million in Denmark, 3,482 million in the Netherlands, 3,986 million in Belgium, 1,543 million in the UK, and 2,872 million in Germany & Central Europe. Against group external sales of SEK 31,586 million, these amounts represent approximately 29.4%, 11.2%, 11.2%, 10.5%, 11.0%, 12.6%, 4.9% and 9.1%, respectively; percentages are calculated from reported figures.[4]

The 2025 report gives group headcount as 24,263, including 23,555 permanent and temporary employees, but does not provide a country-level workforce breakdown. Sweco identifies Stockholm as its group headquarters and provides local contacts across its markets.[20][21] [18]

Company history

Sweco’s roots trace to several Swedish engineering and architecture firms: Theorell Installationskonsult was founded in 1889, Vattenbyggnadsbyrån (VBB) in 1902, and architecture firm FFNS in 1958. In 1997, FFNS acquired the VBB Group, bringing architecture and engineering together under Sweco; the company’s shares began trading on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1998.[22][23]

A major step in Sweco’s European expansion came in 2015 with the acquisition of engineering consultancy Grontmij. In 2025, Sweco completed its offer for Swedish engineering consultancy Projektengagemang, and its annual report also records acquisitions in several European markets.[24] [23]
