Suzano S.A.

Updated

Overview

Suzano S.A. is a Brazilian forestry, pulp and paper company. Its core business is producing eucalyptus pulp for sale and for use in its paper operations, alongside printing and writing paper, paperboard, tissue and fluff pulp. Its products reach more than 100 countries, with Brazil as its home market and manufacturing base.[1]

The company describes its purpose as “Renewing life inspired by trees.” [4] Suzano reported record net revenue of R$50 billion for 2025. Its company profile says it has more than 55,000 people, including employees and contractors.[5][6] [1]

Products & services

Suzano’s product portfolio includes eucalyptus hardwood market pulp, pulp used internally to make paper, and fluff pulp. The company describes its short-fiber eucalyptus pulp as suited to printing and writing papers, tissue, specialty papers and paperboard, where smoothness, brightness, uniformity and absorption are important [7]. Its named pulp lines include Eucaflash for filtration and porosity applications, Eucastrong for tensile strength and physical properties, and Eucanatural for a natural appearance and consistent color [8][9].

Paper products include coated and uncoated printing and writing grades, sold in cut-size, folio and reel formats, as well as paperboard, kraftliner, specialty paper and tissue [1]. Tissue is characterized by softness, bulk and absorption [10]. Suzano also produces Eucafluff® eucalyptus fluff pulp for disposable absorbent products, including diapers, menstrual products and adult incontinence products; the company cites softness, flexibility, liquid retention and compression among its product attributes [15]. Its fluff-pulp capacity increased by 340,000 tonnes in 2025, more than quadrupling output capacity [16].

In 2025, pulp represented 75.5% of Suzano’s net sales and paper 24.5%; the corresponding 2024 shares were 79.3% and 20.7% [17][18]. The company’s disclosures describe product manufacturing and formats rather than a distinct services business or detailed grade-by-grade technical specifications [1][10]. [7]

Geographic presence

In 2025, Suzano’s pulp net sales were concentrated in foreign markets (95.3%), led by Asia (47.6%), Europe (27.9%) and North America (18.2%); Brazil accounted for 4.7%.[19] Paper net sales were more Brazil-focused: Brazil represented 60.7%, while foreign markets accounted for 39.3%, including North America (27.0%), Central and South America (8.7%) and Europe (2.8%). These are product-level mixes, not a consolidated-company geographic revenue breakdown.[20]

Suzano’s industrial footprint is primarily in Brazil, with facilities identified in São Paulo state, Bahia, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Espírito Santo, Pará and Ceará. Its U.S. facilities include Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Waynesville, North Carolina; a separate filing disclosure describes 16 industrial units, 14 in Brazil and two in the U.S.[22][23] Suzano also identifies administrative offices in Salvador and São Paulo, and commercial offices in China, the United States and Europe.[24][25] The company reported 23,094 employees in 2025, but the cited filing does not provide their geographic distribution.[26] The Rio Verde, São Paulo facility was reported closed in January 2026.[22] [19]

Business segments

Suzano reports two business segments: **Pulp** and **Paper**. In FY2025, pulp net sales were R$37,816.1 million, approximately 75.5% of consolidated net sales; the segment includes market pulp and pulp used internally in paper production. The company’s pulp portfolio also includes fluff pulp, but does not separately disclose its revenue contribution.[17]

Paper net sales were R$12,299.5 million, approximately 24.5% of consolidated net sales. The segment covers uncoated and coated woodfree printing-and-writing paper, paperboard and tissue papers. Tissue is not reported as a separate segment, and the available FY2025 disclosures do not give a separate revenue allocation for it.[21][10] [17]

Company history

Leon Feffer founded the business that became Suzano on January 22, 1924, initially as a paper-trading company. It expanded into printing and paper-bag production in the late 1920s, began making its own paper in 1939, and established the Ipiranga plant in São Paulo in 1941. From the 1950s, Suzano developed eucalyptus-based pulp production; by 1961, it was producing paper and pulp industrially using 100% eucalyptus fiber.[27]

The company incorporated Bahia Sul as a joint venture with Vale in 1987, and the Mucuri operation began in 1992. After acquiring Vale’s shares in Bahia Sul in 2001, Suzano merged Companhia Suzano into Bahia Sul in 2004. Leadership passed from founder Leon Feffer to his son Max in 1999 and then to David Feffer in 2001.[30]

In 2015, Suzano began producing fluff pulp and announced investment in tissue. Its 2019 combination with Fibria substantially expanded its pulp business. In 2023, it acquired Kimberly-Clark’s Brazilian tissue business, including the Neve brand and Mogi das Cruzes factory. The following year, Suzano completed construction of its Ribas do Rio Pardo pulp mill and acquired two U.S. industrial facilities from Pactiv Evergreen.[32] [27]
