Company history
Sunbelt Rentals was founded in North Carolina in 1983 and acquired by the UK-based Ashtead Group in 1990. Ashtead’s equipment-rental roots date to the founding of Ashtead Plant Hire in 1947.[21][22][23]
Ashtead expanded its US rental business through the acquisition of Rentokil Initial’s US plant-hire operations in 2000 and, through Sunbelt Rentals, NationsRent in 2006. In 2020, Ashtead rebranded its UK A-Plant business as Sunbelt Rentals, bringing its UK and North American rental operations under the same name.[24][25][26]
In February 2026, Sunbelt Rentals Holdings, Inc. became the group’s new parent company through a reorganization of Ashtead Group. Its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2026.[27][28] [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]
