Company history
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group traces its banking roots to Mitsui Bank, established in 1876, and Sumitomo Bank, established in 1895. Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) began operations in April 2001 through the merger of Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank, a successor to Mitsui Bank. In December 2002, SMFG was established as a holding company, with SMBC becoming its wholly owned subsidiary.[23][24][25]
The group expanded beyond banking through its investment in consumer-finance company Promise, which became an equity-method affiliate in 2004 and a wholly owned subsidiary in 2012. It acquired Nikko Cordial Securities from Citigroup in 2009, adding a major securities business. Its international expansion included the 2012 acquisition of RBS Aviation Capital with partners, later renamed SMBC Aviation Capital, and the 2019 merger of its Indonesian banking subsidiary with Bank BTPN.[26][27][28][29] [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]
