Overview

Sulzer is a Swiss industrial-technology company founded in Winterthur in 1834. It serves energy, water and process industries, with products and services intended to support energy security and efficiency, clean water, and cleaner, more efficient industrial processes.[1][2]

Its three divisions are Flow, which focuses on fluid handling and related equipment; Services, which maintains and repairs rotating equipment; and Chemtech, which supplies technologies for chemical processing and separation.[3] Sulzer operates internationally, with 160 production and service sites worldwide reported for the first half of 2026.[7] In 2025, it reported sales of CHF 3,555.4 million and 13,526 employees at year-end.[8] [1]

Products & services

Sulzer’s product portfolio includes engineered, configured and standard pumps for process, water and wastewater applications. Its offerings include end-suction, between-bearing, vertical, wastewater, dewatering, progressing-cavity and vacuum pumps, with named ranges such as AHLSTAR, NRN and SIL. The SIL inline process pump is specified for flows up to 720 m³/h and heads up to 100 m.[9] For wastewater systems, Sulzer offers Muffin Monster and Channel Monster grinders to condition solids, as well as ABS Piranha submersible grinder pumps for shredding solids before pressurized effluent discharge.[12][13]

Its separation and process equipment includes MellapakEvo, Mellapak/MellapakPlus and MellapakCC structured packings; VGPlus and UFMPlus trays; and other column internals, separators, coalescers and crystallization solutions. OptimEXT combines a Kühni agitated extraction column with turbine mixers for liquid-liquid extraction and integrates solvent-recovery distillation.[14] Services include compressor repair, overhaul, replacement parts and upgrades for centrifugal, axial and process-screw compressors, alongside lifecycle support such as field service, inspections, maintenance and repairs.[18][19]

Sulzer’s reporting presents performance by division—Flow, Services and Chemtech—rather than by individual product; the cited annual and half-year disclosures do not provide product-level sales percentages.[8][20] [8]

Geographic presence

Sulzer’s sales span EMEA, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. In FY2025, sales were CHF 1,430.1 million in EMEA (40.2% of total), CHF 1,351.5 million in the Americas (38.0%) and CHF 773.8 million in Asia-Pacific (21.8%) [21]. The regional mix was similar in the six months ended June 30, 2026: EMEA CHF 672.8 million (40.2%), the Americas CHF 652.7 million (39.0%) and Asia-Pacific CHF 347.0 million (20.7%) [22]. Among specifically identified FY2025 country markets, the United States accounted for CHF 911.1 million (25.6%) of sales and China CHF 380.0 million (10.7%). Named EMEA markets included Saudi Arabia (CHF 202.7 million; 5.7%), the UAE (CHF 162.8 million; 4.6%), the UK (CHF 152.6 million; 4.3%), Germany (CHF 118.2 million; 3.3%) and France (CHF 83.9 million; 2.4%) [21].

Sulzer identifies Winterthur, Switzerland, as its headquarters and reports a global network of 160 manufacturing facilities and service centers [23]. Its FY2025 key figures report 13,526 FTE employees at December 31, 2025 [24]. Geographic workforce distribution is not specified in the cited reporting. Examples of regional footprint investments and operations include a rotating-equipment service center in Ezeiza, Argentina, serving Argentina and the wider Latin American market, an acquisition in Bahrain, and added turbomachinery capacity in North America [25]. For FY2025, Sulzer reported three business divisions. Based on division sales of CHF 3,555.4 million in total, Flow accounted for CHF 1,551.2 million (approximately 43.6%); Services for CHF 1,312.8 million (36.9%); and Chemtech for CHF 691.3 million (19.4%). Flow focuses on engineered pumping solutions and related equipment for water, energy and industrial applications.[4] Services provides parts, maintenance and repair to support the performance and uptime of Sulzer and third-party rotating equipment.[5] Chemtech focuses on mass transfer, static mixing and polymer solutions, serving industries including chemicals, petrochemicals, refining and LNG.[6] [8]

Company history

Sulzer was founded in Winterthur, Switzerland, in 1834 by brothers Johann Jakob and Salomon Sulzer with their father, initially as a foundry and workshop. The company built its first steam engine in 1854 and developed its first diesel engine with Rudolf Diesel in 1898. In 1914, the family business was reorganized into three joint-stock companies, including a holding company.[26]

Sulzer took over the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works in 1961, then divested its diesel and railway businesses in 1997 and 1998 as it refocused its portfolio. It expanded into application systems with acquisitions in 2006, and acquired GTC Technology in 2019, adding licensed petrochemical process technology. In 2021, Applicator Systems was spun off as medmix.[29] [26]
