Overview

STMicroelectronics N.V. is a global semiconductor company that designs, manufactures and markets chips used in automotive, industrial, personal electronics, and communications and computing applications. Its portfolio spans analog and power devices, sensors, microcontrollers, digital integrated circuits and other specialized components. Formed in 1987 from the combination of Italian and French semiconductor businesses, ST has its operational headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and its legal seat in the Netherlands.[1]

ST describes its purpose as working with customers and partners to develop semiconductor technologies that support a more sustainable world, including smarter mobility and more efficient energy management. It reported approximately $11.8 billion in 2025 revenue and describes a workforce of about 48,000 people, with offices in 40 countries and 14 main manufacturing sites.[5] [1]

Products & services

STMicroelectronics’ embedded-processing products include STM32 microcontrollers, which use 32-bit Arm Cortex cores, and industrial microprocessors with 64-bit processing, edge-AI acceleration and Linux support. The STM32N6 adds a neural-processing unit for on-device machine learning. Development tools and software include STM32Cube, CubeMX, TouchGFX for graphical interfaces, and the ST Edge AI suite. Its secure-device portfolio includes ST25 NFC components and STSECURE products for identification, access control and transactions.[9]

Its analog, sensor and power portfolio includes power-management and industrial-control ICs; accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetic and environmental sensors; and FlightSense and BrightSense optical-sensing products. Power devices include silicon and silicon-carbide MOSFETs, IGBTs, rectifiers and modules. MasterGaN and VIPerGaN integrate a silicon driver with GaN power transistors in one package. For vehicles, ST supplies automotive microcontrollers, ADAS-related devices, imaging, sensors, and power products for hybrid and electric vehicles.[14]

In 2025, the analog, power, discrete, MEMS and sensors product group generated $6.77 billion, approximately 57% of consolidated net revenue. The microcontrollers, digital ICs and RF product group generated $5.02 billion, approximately 43%. These are product-group totals rather than revenue figures for individual devices.[19] [9]

Geographic presence

STMicroelectronics N.V. has its corporate legal seat in the Netherlands and its headquarters and operational offices in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland. Its manufacturing footprint spans Europe, Asia and North Africa. Listed front-end sites are in Italy, France, Sweden and Singapore; listed back-end sites are in Italy, France, Malta, Morocco, Malaysia, the Philippines and China.[20]

In 2025, Asia Pacific accounted for $7.46 billion, or approximately 63% of net revenue; Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounted for $2.45 billion, or 21%; and the Americas accounted for $1.90 billion, or 16%. These regional figures reflect customer invoicing locations or shipment destinations rather than necessarily where the products were ultimately used.[23][24] [20]

Business segments

STMicroelectronics reports four business segments within two product groups. Analog, Power & Discrete, MEMS & Sensors (APMS) contains Analog products, MEMS & Sensors (AM&S) and Power & Discrete (P&D). Microcontrollers, Digital ICs & RF products (MDRF) contains Embedded Processing (EMP) and RF & Optical Communications (RFOC). In 2025, APMS accounted for approximately 57% of consolidated revenue and MDRF for approximately 43%; a small “Others” category made up the remainder.[26]

AM&S contributed approximately 43% of 2025 revenue. It covers analog integrated circuits, MEMS sensors and actuators, and optical sensing solutions. P&D contributed approximately 14% and covers power and discrete devices, including silicon and silicon-carbide transistors, IGBTs, rectifiers and power modules.[29] EMP contributed approximately 30% and includes general-purpose and automotive microcontrollers, connected-security products and custom processing for applications such as driver assistance. RFOC contributed approximately 12% and includes RF and optical communications products, ranging and connectivity devices, and digital audio and signaling solutions.[32] [26]

Company history

STMicroelectronics traces its origins to the 1987 combination of Italy’s SGS Microelettronica semiconductor business and the non-military semiconductor business of France’s Thomson Semiconducteurs. Then known as SGS-Thomson Microelectronics, it listed shares in Paris and on the New York Stock Exchange in December 1994. It adopted the name STMicroelectronics N.V. in May 1998.[34][35]

In the 2000s, ST expanded beyond its established semiconductor lines. It began high-volume production of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) on 200-mm wafers in 2006 and introduced its STM32 microcontroller family in 2007.[36][37] In 2008, ST contributed memory assets to Numonyx, a venture with Intel and Francisco Partners, and agreed with Ericsson to combine their mobile-semiconductor businesses in what became ST-Ericsson in 2009.[38][39] ST later expanded its silicon-carbide supply chain through its 2019 acquisition of wafer specialist Norstel.[40] [34]
