STERIS plc is a global healthcare and life-sciences company focused on infection prevention and supporting patient care. Its stated mission is to help customers create a healthier and safer world. The company supplies products and services ranging from sterilization and infection-prevention consumables to capital equipment, maintenance, instrument repair and outsourced reprocessing.[1]
STERIS operates through three core businesses: Healthcare, which serves hospitals and other care settings; Applied Sterilization Technologies, which provides contract sterilization and laboratory testing for medical-device and pharmaceutical manufacturers; and Life Sciences, which supports biopharmaceutical and medical-device manufacturing.[2][3][4] It serves customers globally, with sterilization facilities across the Americas, Europe and Asia.[5] For the fiscal year ended March 2025, STERIS reported approximately $5.46 billion in revenue and averaged about 18,000 employees worldwide.[6][7] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Products & services
STERIS’s healthcare products cover cleaning, sterilization, sterility monitoring and surgical procedures. They include AMSCO steam sterilizers, V-PRO low-temperature sterilizers for heat-sensitive devices, and washer-disinfectors. The V-PRO maX 2 can process a 22.7 kg load of non-lumened devices in a 28-minute cycle; Celerity 20 biological indicators provide a 20-minute read for common steam cycles. For operating rooms, STERIS sells surgical tables and HarmonyAIR lights; its 7080 table has a sliding tabletop designed to support total-body imaging.[8][9][10][11]
Its endoscope-reprocessing range includes Revital-Ox cleaning detergents, the MEDIVATORS ADVANTAGE PLUS automated endoscope reprocessor and the SYSTEM 1 endo liquid chemical sterilant system for cleaned, reusable heat-sensitive devices. Healthcare services include surgical-instrument repair and off-site processing of instrument trays. For pharmaceutical manufacturing and cleanrooms, STERIS supplies detergents, disinfectants, vaporized-hydrogen-peroxide (VHP) biodecontamination equipment and pure-steam generators. Examples include the VHP 1000ED mobile room-decontamination unit and Finn-Aqua T-Series pure-steam generator.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18]
Through Applied Sterilization Technologies, STERIS provides contract sterilization using gamma, electron-beam and X-ray irradiation, ethylene oxide, VHP and steam, alongside laboratory testing and sterilization validation. It also offers Mevex linear-accelerator systems and associated product-handling and automation equipment. Across STERIS, services represented approximately 47% of fiscal 2025 revenue, consumables 31% and capital equipment 22%.[19][20][21][22] [23][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]
Geographic presence
STERIS plc has its principal executive office in Dublin, Ireland, and its primary administrative offices in Mentor, Ohio. It operates approximately 250 sales, administrative, manufacturing and operational locations across the United States and more than 35 other countries.[24][25][26]
Its Applied Sterilization Technologies business has more than 60 contract-sterilization facilities across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Significant manufacturing locations identified by the company include sites in the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Finland, Italy and Germany. STERIS does not disclose revenue or employee counts by country or region in its fiscal 2025 annual filing.[27][22] [24][25][26][27][22]
Business segments
STERIS reports three business segments: Healthcare, Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST), and Life Sciences. In fiscal 2025, Healthcare generated approximately 71% of revenue. It serves healthcare providers, particularly sterile processing departments and procedural areas, with infection-prevention consumables and equipment, maintenance, instrument repair, and outsourced instrument reprocessing.[2][22]
AST generated approximately 19% of fiscal 2025 revenue. It serves medical-device and pharmaceutical manufacturers through contract sterilization and laboratory testing facilities, and supplies sterilization equipment and control systems. Its services extend from product testing and process validation to sterilization.[3][22]
Life Sciences generated approximately 10% of fiscal 2025 revenue. It supports biopharmaceutical and medical-device manufacturing, particularly aseptic manufacturing, with cleaning and contamination-control consumables, sterilization and decontamination equipment, maintenance, and specialty services. STERIS previously reported Dental as a separate segment; following its divestiture, Dental is treated as a discontinued operation rather than part of the three-segment breakdown.[4][28][22] [2][3][4][28][29][29][29][29][22]
Company history
STERIS traces its origins to Innovative Medical Technologies, founded by Raymond Kralovic in Mentor, Ohio, in 1985 to develop low-temperature liquid sterilization technology. The company adopted the STERIS name in 1987, and its System 1 sterilization processor received U.S. regulatory clearance in 1988.[30][31] Acquisitions broadened the business: AMSCO added surgical and hospital equipment in 1996, while the 1997 Isomedix transaction expanded STERIS into contract sterilization services.[32][33][34]
In 2015, STERIS combined with Synergy Health, substantially expanding its outsourced sterilization operations and establishing a UK-domiciled parent.[35][36] The parent company moved its domicile to Ireland in 2019.
