Steel Dynamics, Inc. is a North American metals producer whose businesses span steelmaking, metals recycling, steel fabrication and aluminum products. It uses recycled scrap as a primary input to steel production. Its products include flat-rolled and long steel, steel joists and decking for non-residential construction, and flat-rolled aluminum. Products & services
Steel Dynamics produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated flat-rolled steel. Its coating and processing operations supply galvanized, painted and other finished sheet products; annual capabilities include approximately 5.5 million tons of galvanizing and 2.0 million tons of painting. Sheet steel accounted for 64% of steel-operations net sales in 2025.[9][10]
Its long-product range includes structural beams, channels, angles and reinforcing bar; engineered special-bar-quality and merchant-bar-quality rounds; and specialty shapes and light structural steel. Rail products span standard-carbon, intermediate-hardness and premium grades in lengths of 40 to 320 feet, with welding capability for continuous rail up to 1,650 feet. Bar-finishing services include turning, polishing, straightening, chamfering, precision sawing and heat treatment; other downstream services include cutting, punching, welding, galvanizing and coating.[11][12][13]
Through New Millennium Building Systems, the company supplies steel joists and joist girders, as well as roof, form, cellular, composite-floor, architectural and bridge decking for non-residential construction. Steel fabrication represented 8% of consolidated net sales in 2025. OmniSource processes and sells ferrous and nonferrous scrap—including copper, brass, aluminum and stainless steel—and provides scrap transportation, brokerage and management services. Steel Dynamics is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and operates facilities across the United States and Mexico. Its listed steel mills include flat-roll operations in Butler, Indiana; Columbus, Mississippi; and Sinton, Texas, as well as mills in Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. Its metals-recycling operations span multiple U.S. states and Mexico.[18][1][19]
The company’s steel-fabrication facilities include sites in six U.S. states and Juárez, Mexico. Its listed aluminum facilities are a recycled aluminum flat-rolled products mill in Columbus, Mississippi, and a recycled aluminum slab facility in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.[19]
The United States accounts for most sales: in 2025, U.S. external sales were $17.02 billion, or approximately 93.6% of consolidated sales, while external sales outside the United States were $1.15 billion, or approximately 6.4%. Business segments
Steel Dynamics reports four business segments. Steel Operations produces flat-rolled, structural and rail steel, and engineered bar products, with associated coating and processing activities. Metals Recycling processes and markets ferrous and nonferrous scrap, including scrap supplied to the company’s steel mills. Steel Fabrication makes joists, joist girders and steel deck systems for non-residential construction. Aluminum Operations produces recycled-aluminum flat-rolled products and includes slab centers and a deox-rod facility.[2][15][14][4]
Based on sales to customers outside the company in 2025, Steel Operations contributed approximately 72% of consolidated net sales; Metals Recycling, 11%; Steel Fabrication, 8%; and Aluminum Operations, 2%.[20] The remaining roughly 7% was not attributed to those four segments in the external-sales breakdown. Company history
Steel Dynamics was founded in 1993 by Keith Busse, Mark Millett and Richard “Dick” Teets. Steel production began at its first mill in Butler, Indiana, in 1996, the same year the company went public. It expanded into steel fabrication with the formation of New Millennium Building Systems in 1999 and the start of production at its first plant in 2000.[22][23][24]
Acquisitions broadened the business: Steel Dynamics bought steel producer Roanoke Electric Steel in 2006 and metals recycler OmniSource in 2007. Co-founder Mark Millett succeeded Busse as chief executive in January 2012. The company added the Columbus, Mississippi, flat-roll mill through its 2014 acquisition of Severstal Columbus and acquired the Heartland flat-roll processing operation in 2018. It started up a new steel mill in Sinton, Texas, in 2022 and announced plans that year to expand into aluminum flat-rolled products.[25][26][27][28][29][30][31] [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31]
