Company profile

Star Bulk Carriers Corp.

Updated

Overview

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. is a global dry-bulk shipping company that owns and operates vessels carrying commodities such as iron ore, minerals, grain, bauxite, fertilizers and steel products. Its fleet spans vessel classes from Supramax and Ultramax to Capesize and Newcastlemax, serving customers across major maritime markets.[1][2] The company states that its mission is to transport cargo efficiently while protecting people, the environment and its vessels, and to meet or exceed safety and quality standards.[3]

As of February 25, 2026, Star Bulk reported 141 fully delivered dry-bulk carriers with total capacity of 14.0 million deadweight tonnes; 2025 voyage revenue was $1,042.5 million.[4][5] Its global operations are supported by executive offices in Greece, the United States and Singapore.[1] [4]

Products & services

Star Bulk Carriers’ service is the seaborne transport of dry-bulk commodities, including iron ore, minerals, grain, bauxite, fertilizers and steel products. Its fleet spans Newcastlemax, Capesize, Post-Panamax, Kamsarmax, Panamax, Ultramax and Supramax vessel classes. At year-end 2025, the company reported 136 owned vessels, ranging from 55,569 to 209,537 deadweight tonnes (dwt), with combined capacity of 13.7 million dwt; it also charters in third-party vessels.[6][7]

The company provides transportation under time charters, in which a vessel is hired for a period at a fixed or index-linked daily rate, and voyage charters, contracted for a specified voyage and cargo at a per-ton or lump-sum freight rate. A smaller portion of revenue comes from pool arrangements. The filing does not break out revenue by commodity carried.[8] [6]

Geographic presence

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. operates vessels globally. Its filing highlights Asia-Pacific port calls, particularly loading or discharging dry bulk cargo in China, and identifies long-haul iron ore and coal routes for its Capesize vessels.[9][10] The company also identifies exposure to the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz and notes that its Newcastlemax vessels can enter Newcastle, Australia.[11][12]

The company’s executive offices are in Athens, Greece, with a registered office in Majuro, Marshall Islands.[13] The company also identifies offices in New York, Stamford, and Singapore.[14] In 2024, Star Bulk reported transporting cargo across 105 countries; this indicates broad trade reach rather than a breakdown of revenue by geography.[15] [9]

Business segments

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. reports one operating and reportable segment: ownership and operation of dry-bulk vessels. Its vessels transport commodities including iron ore, minerals, grain, bauxite, fertilizers, and steel products. The company assesses performance and allocates resources on a consolidated fleet basis rather than by vessel class or charter type.[16]

The single segment accounted for 100% of reportable-segment revenue; 2025 voyage revenue was $1,042.499 million. Revenue is generated substantially through time charters, voyage charters, and pool arrangements.[18][19] Fleet classes such as Newcastlemax, Capesize, Kamsarmax, Panamax, Ultramax, and Supramax are not reported as separate segments, and the filing does not provide their individual revenue contributions.[16][7] [16]

Company history

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. was incorporated in the Republic of the Marshall Islands on December 13, 2006. In 2007, it emerged from a merger with Star Maritime Acquisition Corp. and began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SBLK.[1][20]

A major expansion came in 2014, when Star Bulk completed its merger with Oceanbulk, adding 15 operating vessels and contracts for 26 newbuildings. That year it also agreed to acquire 34 operating vessels from Excel Maritime, with the acquisition completed through 2015.[21] In July 2018, it completed the acquisition of all 15 operating dry-bulk vessels owned by Songa Bulk.[24]

In July 2014, Petros Pappas became CEO, succeeding Spyros Capralos, who moved to the role of non-executive chairman.[25] Star Bulk agreed to combine with Eagle Bulk Shipping in December 2023 and completed the merger on April 9, 2024; the transaction added Eagle’s fleet of 52 Supramax and Ultramax vessels.[26][27]
