Company history

Frederick T. Stanley established a bolt-manufacturing business in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1843; it became The Stanley Works in 1852. S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker founded their company in Baltimore in 1910. In 1917, Black & Decker filed for a portable electric drill featuring a pistol grip and trigger switch, a milestone in the development of power tools.[30][31]

Black & Decker later developed tools for NASA’s Gemini and Apollo programs, including the Apollo Lunar Surface Drill. The Stanley Works and Black & Decker announced a merger in 2009; it closed on March 12, 2010, and The Stanley Works adopted the name Stanley Black & Decker, Inc.[32]

In 2017, the company completed its purchase of the Craftsman brand from Sears Holdings. In 2019, it acquired a 20% stake in MTD, marking an expansion into outdoor power equipment.[35][36] [30]
