Products & services
Spotify’s main consumer products are its Premium Service and its Ad-Supported Service. Premium provides unlimited online and offline high-quality streaming of music and podcasts, and in select markets also gives eligible users limited online and offline streaming access to audiobooks; it works across computers, tablets, mobile devices, speakers, receivers, televisions, cars, game consoles, and other smart devices, and it is offered without commercial breaks. The Ad-Supported Service has no subscription fee and generally provides limited on-demand online access to music and unlimited online access to podcasts across computers, tablets, mobile devices, and other smart devices. Spotify says its platform offers access to more than 100 million music tracks and 6.5 million podcast titles, and in select markets more than 350,000 audiobooks are available for à la carte purchase while eligible Premium subscribers receive monthly access to a catalog of more than 200,000 audiobooks.[14][15][5]
Within Premium, Spotify offers Standard, Family, Duo, and Student plans, and in select markets also offers a Basic plan; the Family plan supports one primary subscriber plus up to five additional sub-accounts, while Duo supports one primary subscriber plus one additional sub-account. In the U.S., Spotify also offers an Audiobook Access Tier that provides a specified number of audiobook hours per month without all Premium benefits, while the Basic plan includes certain Premium benefits but excludes monthly audiobook listening time. For creators and advertisers, Spotify operates the Spotify Audience Network, an audio advertising marketplace spanning Spotify-owned and exclusive podcasts, enterprise publishers via Megaphone, and emerging creators via Spotify for Creators; Spotify says this network includes hosting and ad-insertion capabilities for targeted advertising on and off the platform. In audiobooks, Spotify also uses Findaway Voices by Spotify to let creators distribute titles to the service. In 2024, Premium generated 88.2% of total revenue and Ad-Supported generated 11.8%.[16][17][18][19][20] [14][15][5][16][17][18][19][20]

Business segments
Spotify reports two reportable segments: Premium and Ad-Supported.[25][26] The Premium segment is the paid subscription business; Spotify says it generates Premium revenue through the sale of subscriptions, and the service provides unlimited online and offline high-quality streaming access to music and podcasts, including a music experience without commercial breaks.[27][28] The Ad-Supported segment is the free tier; Spotify says it generates revenue primarily from the sale of display, audio, and video advertising, and the service generally offers limited on-demand music access and unlimited podcast access without a subscription fee.[29][30]
Based on Spotify’s 2024 segment revenue disclosure, Premium contributed about 88% of segment revenue (€13,819 million) and Ad-Supported about 12% (€1,854 million).[31][20] Spotify’s segment reporting assigns revenue and directly attributable costs to these two segments, while certain broader operating expenses and finance items are managed at the group level rather than allocated to individual segments.[26][32] [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][20][32]
Company history
Spotify Technology S.A. was incorporated in Luxembourg on December 27, 2006, and became a Luxembourg public limited liability company on March 20, 2009.[1] The company was founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, and Spotify says it launched in 2008.[33][34][35] In its own description of its development, Spotify says it helped shift music consumption from a transaction-based ownership model to an access-based streaming model.[36] A major corporate milestone came in April 2018, when Spotify listed publicly through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange.[37]
From 2019, Spotify broadened its strategy beyond music into spoken-word audio. The company says it has expanded its podcast offerings since 2019, and it tied that push to acquisitions including Anchor and Gimlet in 2019, followed by deals such as Parcast in 2019 and Megaphone in 2020.[36][38][39][40] Since 2022, Spotify has also expanded into audiobooks, including the closing of its acquisition of Findaway in 2022, marking another step in its evolution from a music-streaming service into a broader audio platform.[36][41] [1][33][34][36][35][37][38][39][40][41]
