Overview
Sony Group Corporation is a Tokyo-headquartered entertainment and technology company. Its businesses span PlayStation games and network services, music, film and television, consumer and professional electronics, and image sensors. Founded in 1946, Sony states its purpose as “Fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology.” [1][2][3]
Sony sells across major markets including Japan, the United States, Europe and China. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, it reported ¥12.96 trillion in consolidated sales and 112,300 consolidated employees. Those figures predate the October 2025 partial spin-off of its financial-services business.[4][5][1][6] [1][2][3][4][5][6]
Products & services
Sony’s PlayStation products include PS5 consoles, games, downloadable add-on content and peripherals. The PS5 supports 4K gaming, ray tracing and fast loading through a solid-state drive; the DualSense controller provides haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. PlayStation Plus subscriptions offer online multiplayer and monthly games, with higher tiers adding a game catalog and, where available, cloud streaming. In the fiscal year ended March 2025, digital software and add-on content generated ¥2.29 trillion—about half of Sony’s ¥4.54 trillion in Game & Network Services sales.[7][8][9][10] [11][11][7][8][9][12][13]
Geographic presence
Sony Group Corporation is based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, and has major facilities and subsidiaries across Japan, North America, Europe and Asia. Its disclosed locations include semiconductor operations in Kumamoto, Japan; entertainment and electronics operations in New York and California; operations in the United Kingdom; and manufacturing facilities in Thailand and Malaysia. These are examples of major facilities rather than a complete list of locations.[14][15]
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Sony attributed approximately 31.9% of sales and financial-services revenue to customers in the United States, 20.3% to Europe, 17.3% to Japan, 12.7% to Asia-Pacific, 9.6% to China and 8.3% to other areas. The geographic classification is based on customer location, not where products are made. At March 31, 2025, Sony employed 57,500 people in Japan and 54,800 outside Japan, out of 112,300 worldwide.[15] [14][15]
Business segments
Sony Group reports five continuing business segments. Game & Network Services covers PlayStation hardware, games, add-on content and network services; Music encompasses recorded music, publishing and visual media; Pictures produces and distributes films and television programming and operates media networks. Entertainment, Technology & Services includes televisions, audio and video products, cameras and smartphones, while Imaging & Sensing Solutions primarily supplies image sensors.[16][17]
Using sales to external customers for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, the approximate shares of these five segments’ combined sales were Game & Network Services 38%, Entertainment, Technology & Services 20%, Music 15%, Imaging & Sensing Solutions 14% and Pictures 13%. Sony also reported a Financial Services segment, principally Japanese insurance and banking, which accounted for about 7% of total reported sales and financial services revenue that year. Following the partial spin-off of Sony Financial Group in October 2025, Sony treats Financial Services as a discontinued operation rather than part of its continuing business.[18][17][6] [16][17][19][20][18][6]
Company history
Sony began in 1946, when Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita established Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo in Japan. The company introduced Japan’s first transistor radio in 1955 and adopted the Sony Corporation name in 1958. It went on to launch the Trinitron color television in 1968, the Walkman portable cassette player in 1979 and a compact-disc player in 1982.[21][22][23][24]
Sony expanded beyond electronics by acquiring CBS Records in 1988 and Columbia Pictures Entertainment in 1989. It entered the home video-game console market with the PlayStation’s launch in Japan in 1994. In 2021, Sony Corporation changed its name to Sony Group Corporation as part of a restructuring that placed its electronics businesses under a separate company bearing the Sony Corporation name.[25][26][27][28] [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]
