SMITHFIELD FOODS INC

Updated

Overview

Smithfield Foods is a food and meat-processing company focused on pork, with businesses spanning packaged meats, fresh pork and hog production, as well as Mexico and bioscience operations. Its defining products include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli meats, ham and other pork cuts, sold under brands including Smithfield, Eckrich and Nathan’s Famous.[1]

The company is headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia, where it has been based since 1936. Its operations are primarily in the United States and Mexico, and it employs approximately 34,500 people across those countries. Its fresh-pork exports reach markets including China, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Mexico. Smithfield describes its mission as “Good food. Responsibly.” [1] [1]

Products & services

Smithfield’s packaged-meat products include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli and lunch meats, dry sausage such as pepperoni and Genoa, ham, ready-to-eat products, and prepared foods such as pre-cooked entrées. Named brands include Smithfield, Eckrich, Nathan’s Famous, Farmland, Armour, Farmer John, Kretschmar, Krakus, John Morrell, Cook’s, Gwaltney, Carando, Margherita, Curly’s and Smithfield Culinary. The company also sells private-label products; most packaged meats are sold through U.S. retail and foodservice channels.[3]

Fresh pork products include primal and sub-primal cuts and offal, including bellies, butts, hams, loins, picnics and ribs. They are sold to retail, foodservice and industrial customers, as well as export markets. About one-third of fresh-pork products, including most hams, bellies and trimmings, is transferred internally to Packaged Meats.[4] Hog Production also sells livestock feed and grains and provides transportation and other ancillary services to external customers.[6]

Smithfield describes Fresh Pork product development focused on convenience, smaller portions and varied flavors, alongside whole-hog utilization and products adapted to global tastes.[7] In FY2025, packaged meats accounted for approximately 56.4% of consolidated sales, fresh pork 32.3%, Hog Production 7.9% and Other 3.4%; these are calculated from reported segment sales and consolidated sales, and are sales shares rather than profit shares.[8][9] [3]

Geographic presence

Smithfield Foods’ operating footprint is concentrated in the United States and Mexico. Its FY2025 property listings cover U.S. packaged-meat production facilities in 17 states, fresh-pork processing in six states, and hog farms and feed facilities in 10 states each. In Mexico, the company lists a fresh-pork processing facility and 140 hog-production facilities in Puebla and Veracruz, as well as a corporate facility in Puebla. Smithfield is headquartered in Virginia.[10][1] The company reported approximately 32,000 U.S. employees and 2,500 in Mexico.[1]

FY2025 consolidated sales were $15.531 billion; the cited disclosure does not give a country- or region-level revenue breakdown. It reports $1.753 billion in “Exports” sales, approximately 11.3% of consolidated sales, but this is a sales-channel category rather than a geographic revenue split.[8] Smithfield’s former European business was carved out in 2024 and operated separately as Morliny Foods, so those European operations are not part of the FY2025 footprint described here.[11] [10]

Business segments

Smithfield Foods reports four business segments: Packaged Meats, Fresh Pork, Hog Production, and Other. Based on fiscal 2025 external sales as a share of consolidated sales, their approximate contributions were Packaged Meats 56.4%, Fresh Pork 32.3%, Hog Production 7.9%, and Other 3.4%. These percentages exclude intersegment sales; minor differences from 100% reflect rounding.[8]

Packaged Meats processes fresh meat into products including bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli meats, ham, ready-to-eat products, and prepared foods. Fresh Pork processes live hogs into pork cuts and other products, with some output transferred to Packaged Meats. Hog Production raises hogs, primarily for processing by Fresh Pork, and also sells feed and grains and provides transportation and other services.[3]

The company also presents Retail, Foodservice, Exports, Industrial, and Other/Unallocated as sales channels, rather than additional reportable business segments. The cited segment descriptions do not specify the activities included in the Other segment.[8] [8]

Company history

Smithfield Packing Company was founded in Smithfield, Virginia, on September 16, 1936, by Joseph W. Luter Sr. and Joseph W. Luter Jr.[14]

The company expanded through a series of acquisitions, including Gwaltney in 1981, John Morrell in 1995, Carroll’s Foods in 1999 and Farmland in 2003.[15] In 2013, Smithfield was taken private and became a wholly owned subsidiary of WH Group.[16]
