Company history

A. O. Smith traces its origins to 1874, when C. J. Smith opened a machine shop in Milwaukee. The business entered automotive manufacturing in 1903, supplying frames to Cadillac, and incorporated as A. O. Smith Company in 1904. Its early industrial development included innovations in welded steel tubing and glass-lined tanks, technologies that later supported its entry into water heating.[2][27]

The company exited automotive manufacturing in 1997, marking a shift away from a business that had been central to its history. It expanded its water-heating and treatment businesses through acquisitions, including Lochinvar in 2011, Aquasana in 2016, Hague Quality Water in 2017 and Water-Right in 2019.[28]

A. O. Smith began operating in China in 1995 and developed manufacturing and sales operations in India from 2008 onward. In 2024, it completed the acquisition of Pureit, expanding its water-purification business in India and South Asia.[18]

Leadership transitions included Ajita G. Rajendra becoming president and CEO in 2013, Kevin J. Wheeler taking the role in 2018, and Stephen M. Shafer becoming president and CEO in 2025. In 2026, the company completed its acquisition of Leonard Valve, adding water-temperature-control products to its portfolio.[34] [18]
