Company profile

SM Energy Co

Updated

Overview

SM Energy Co. is an independent U.S. oil and natural gas exploration and production company. It acquires, explores, develops, and produces oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. Its operations are concentrated in the Permian, Maverick Basin/South Texas, Uinta Basin, and DJ Basin; the company’s footprint is domestic rather than global.[1][2]

The company describes its purpose as making people’s lives better through responsible energy production, while supporting domestic energy security and the communities where it operates.[3] In FY2025, SM Energy reported $3.979 billion in total operating revenues and other income.[4] A third-party source reports 1,241 employees at year-end 2025.[5] Founded in 1908, the company completed its IPO in 1992 and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as SM.[1] [1]

Products & services

SM Energy’s products are crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGLs); the company’s activities include acquiring, exploring, developing, and producing these hydrocarbons. No standalone customer-facing services or specific product-grade specifications were identified in the reviewed sources.[6]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported production was 38.0 million barrels of oil, 159.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas, and 8.9 million barrels of NGLs, totaling 73.4 million barrels of oil equivalent.[7] Production revenue was $3,288 million from oil, $139 million from gas, and $206 million from NGLs, or approximately 90.5%, 3.8%, and 5.7% of the $3,633 million total, respectively (percentages calculated from reported figures).[7]

The company’s filing gives a representative industry NGL barrel composition—42% ethane, 28% propane, 6% isobutane, 11% normal butane, and 13% natural gasoline—but cautions that this may not match SM Energy’s actual NGL mix.[8] [7]

Geographic presence

SM Energy’s U.S. operating footprint spans Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Its reported regions include the Permian Basin—Midland and Delaware—in West Texas and New Mexico; the DJ Basin in northeast Colorado; South Texas’s Maverick Basin; and the Uinta Basin in northeast Utah.[9][10] At the latest reported acreage figures, the company had about 233,000 net acres in the Permian, 301,000 in the DJ Basin and 99,000 in the Uinta Basin. Its remaining South Texas position was about 95,000 net acres in Dimmit and Webb counties.[11] Midland Basin acreage includes positions in Howard and Martin counties and in Upton and Midland counties.[14]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, oil, gas and NGL production revenue was reported by operating area as $1.839 billion in the Permian (about 51%), $921 million in the DJ Basin (25%), $381 million in South Texas (10%) and $492 million in the Uinta Basin (14%). These figures reflect operating areas, not customer sales destinations; the South Texas six-month total includes activity before assets were divested on April 30, 2026.[15][16] SM Energy’s principal executive office is in Denver, Colorado. Its 2025 filing also lists offices in Midland, Houston and Catarina, Texas, and Roosevelt, Utah; geographic employee distribution was not disclosed.[17] [9]

Business segments

SM Energy reports one operating and reportable segment: U.S. oil, natural gas and NGL exploration and production (E&P). It does not report separate reportable segments by basin or product; its geographic and product disclosures are supplemental revenue breakdowns, not segment contributions.[21][22]

For the first half of 2026, production revenue was approximately 51% Permian Basin, 25% DJ Basin, 14% Uinta Basin and 10% South Texas. The South Texas share reflects operations only through the April 30, 2026 divestiture, and the January 2026 Civitas merger affects comparability.[15][23] The disclosed area focus includes development optimization and delineation in the Midland and Delaware basins, and delineation and development in the DJ Basin; Uinta operations target oil-rich Lower Green River and Wasatch intervals, while South Texas activity has focused on the Austin Chalk and western Eagle Ford.[24]

For comparison, 2025 production revenue was approximately 44% Midland Basin, 28% South Texas and 28% Uinta Basin. These percentages describe geographic revenue, rather than separately reported business segments.[28] [21]

Company history

SM Energy traces its origins to 1908, was incorporated in Delaware in 1915, and went public in 1992 as St. Mary Land & Exploration Company.[29][30] In 2009, acquisitions brought the company into the Maverick Basin and gave it Eagle Ford exposure; it adopted the SM Energy name in 2010.[30]

In 2016, SM Energy acquired Rock Oil’s Midland Basin acreage and divested assets outside Divide County in the Williston Basin. In 2017, it sold non-operated Eagle Ford assets and related midstream interests, marking a substantial shift in its portfolio toward the Permian Basin.[31]

The company added 22,800 net acres in the Midland Basin through transactions closed in 2023, then expanded into the Uinta Basin through acquisitions completed in 2024.[34][35] SM Energy agreed to merge with Civitas Resources in November 2025 and completed the merger on January 30, 2026; Beth McDonald became president and CEO upon closing.[36][37] [29]
