Company history

SEB traces its origins to 1856, when André Oscar Wallenberg founded the bank with the aim of providing inventors and entrepreneurs with capital for industrial development. The modern Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken was formed in 1972, combining the older Enskilda banking tradition with Skandinaviska Banken.[1]

A major step in SEB’s international expansion came in 1999, when it acquired Germany’s BfG Bank AG. The following year, SEB strengthened its position in the Baltic region: Eesti Ühispank became part of the SEB Group in October 2000, and SEB also moved to increase its offers for Latvia’s Latvijas Unibanka and Lithuania’s Vilniaus Bankas. These transactions were important in shaping the group’s later footprint outside Sweden.[52] [1]
