Overview

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation is a semiconductor company specializing in NAND flash controller ICs and related firmware and storage solutions. Its products include controllers for client and enterprise SSDs, eMMC and UFS embedded storage, and memory cards and drives, serving computing, data-center, mobile, automotive and industrial applications.[1] Founded in 1995 in San Jose, California, the company sells globally and has offices in Taiwan, the United States, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Macao.[4][5]

For 2025, Silicon Motion reported net sales of US$885.627 million and 2,009 employees at year-end.[6][7] [1]

Products & services

Silicon Motion’s products are primarily NAND flash controllers and related storage solutions. Its controllers combine integrated circuits and firmware and are sold as configurable platforms or turnkey solutions for client and enterprise SSDs, eMMC/UFS embedded storage, flash cards and drives, and specialized industrial, commercial and automotive storage. The portfolio includes SMI controllers, MonTitan enterprise SSD controllers, and FerriSSD, Ferri-eMMC and Ferri-UFS products. Capabilities described include support for PCIe, NVMe and UFS standards and NAND technologies, with features such as error-correction, wear-leveling, encryption, power-loss protection and temperature monitoring.[1]

MonTitan controllers target enterprise storage, including high-capacity QLC SSDs for nearline storage and TLC SSDs for performance-sensitive, lower-latency caching. Ferri products address small-form-factor embedded storage applications. Specific examples in Silicon Motion’s product materials include the SM2508 client controller, with PCIe Gen5 x4 and stated maximum sequential read/write speeds of 14.5/14 GB/s; the MonTitan SM8366, a PCIe Gen5 x4 enterprise controller with 16 NAND channels and stated sequential performance above 14.2 GB/s; and the FerriSSD, a PCIe Gen4 x4 BGA SSD offered up to 1 TB.[9]

In 2025, SSD controllers represented 45–50% of net sales, eMMC/UFS controllers 40–45%, and SSD solutions 0–5%. The company also offers customer-configurable platforms and turnkey solutions; service revenue has been insignificant relative to product sales.[13][14] [1]

Geographic presence

In FY2025, Silicon Motion reported operating facilities in Hsinchu and Taipei, Taiwan; Shanghai and Shenzhen, China; and Milpitas, California, in the United States. Its principal executive offices were in Hong Kong. The company’s official locations page also lists offices in Japan, South Korea and Macau, in addition to Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong and the United States.[15]

Geographically, Taiwan is a major base for the company: a majority of employees and significant R&D and corporate functions are located there, while the company also has an R&D center in Shanghai. The FY2025 filing does not provide a numerical employee breakdown by location.[18][19]

For FY2025, 99% of revenue came from customers outside the United States. China, Japan and Singapore together accounted for 79% of revenue; the filing does not specify the individual contribution of each. The company’s products are marketed worldwide, with China, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan identified as primary markets.[19][20]

Silicon Motion uses a fabless production model: its primary foundries fabricate most semiconductors in Taiwan and China, and its foundry and assembly/testing subcontractors are located in those two geographies.[21] [15]

Business segments

Silicon Motion reports **one operating/reportable segment**, rather than separate segments for its product lines. Its reported product categories provide the clearest revenue-mix breakdown.[23][24]

For FY2025, the company reported approximate shares of net sales of **45%–50% from SSD controllers**, used in SSDs for PCs and other client devices, including enterprise products; **40%–45% from eMMC and UFS controllers**, used in smartphones and IoT devices; and **0%–5% from SSD solutions**, primarily small-form-factor drives for industrial, commercial, and automotive applications. These are product-category contributions, not separately reported segment results.[25][13] [23]

Company history

Silicon Motion traces its origins to 1995, when Silicon Motion, Inc. was founded in San Jose by Wallace C. Kou as a graphics-processor company. Taiwan-based Feiya Technology, incorporated in 1997 to develop flash-memory products, acquired Silicon Motion, Inc. in 2002 and adopted the Silicon Motion name. In 2005, a Cayman Islands holding company acquired the Taiwan business, and Silicon Motion listed on Nasdaq that year.[26]

The company broadened its business through acquisitions and product development. It agreed to acquire mobile-communications chipmaker Future Communications IC in 2007, then sold that business to Dialog Semiconductor in 2019. It acquired enterprise-storage company Shannon Systems in 2015. Over the following years, Silicon Motion introduced SSD and embedded-storage controller products, including a SATA controller supporting TLC NAND in 2014, a turnkey solution for 3D NAND in 2016, and a UFS 2.1 controller family in 2017.[29]

In 2022, Silicon Motion agreed to a merger with MaxLinear, but the transaction did not close after MaxLinear purported to terminate the agreement in 2023 following China’s antitrust approval. The resulting termination-fee dispute proceeded to arbitration, with hearings concluding in 2026.[36] [26]
