Siegfried is a pharmaceutical services company and contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO). It develops processes and manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates, as well as finished drug products. Its capabilities include solid oral dosage forms, sterile and aseptic filling, ophthalmics, controlled substances, and viral vectors.[1][2]

The company operates across Europe, the United States, and Asia, with production sites in Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Malta, the United States, and China. For FY2025, Siegfried reported net sales of CHF 1,327.8 million and 4,294 permanent and temporary employees.[1]

Siegfried’s report describes its support for the UN Global Compact’s mission to improve the world and care for customers, patients, and society; it does not specifically identify this wording as Siegfried’s own corporate mission.[5] [1]

Products & services

Siegfried’s product-related services cover development and contract manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs, or drug substances) and intermediates, from early-stage process development through commercial scale, as well as production and packaging of finished pharmaceutical products. Its capabilities include milling, micronization and spray drying for particle processing; solid tablets and capsules; semi-solid ointments and gels; and sterile-filled liquid products.[7][8] The company also reports capabilities in controlled-substance manufacture, aseptic filling, ophthalmics and viral vectors.[2]

In FY2025, Drug Substances generated CHF 916.3 million, or 69% of net sales, while Drug Products generated CHF 411.6 million, or 31%.[9] The FY2025 presentation characterizes its product portfolio as 70% exclusive products and 30% multi-client products.[10] [7]

Geographic presence

In FY2025, Siegfried’s reported global network comprised facilities in seven countries: Switzerland (Zofingen, Evionnaz and Zurich/Schlieren), the USA (Pennsville, Irvine and Grafton, Wisconsin), Malta (Hal Far), China (Nantong), Germany (Hameln and Minden), France (St. Vulbas) and Spain (Barberà del Vallès and El Masnou). The sites support different activities, including API and intermediate production, drug-product manufacturing, sterile filling, ophthalmics and development services.[2]

At year-end 2025, the company reported 3,604 employees in Europe, 437 in the USA and 253 in Asia, out of 4,294 overall—approximately 83.9%, 10.2% and 5.9%, respectively.[4] FY2025 group net sales were CHF 1,327.8 million; the cited key-figures disclosure reports consolidated sales rather than a geographic breakdown.[3] [2]

Business segments

Siegfried reports its business through two clusters. **Drug Substances (DS)** generated CHF 916.3 million in FY2025 net sales—approximately 69% of group net sales of CHF 1,327.8 million. Its activities include developing manufacturing processes from early phase to commercial scale and synthesizing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).[11]

**Drug Products (DP)** generated CHF 411.6 million in FY2025 net sales—approximately 31% of group net sales. Its focus is producing and packaging finished dosage forms, including solid, semi-solid and sterile liquid products.[11][8]

These percentages are approximate calculations from reported cluster sales divided by total group net sales. The report presents the breakdown as two business clusters; the cited disclosures do not establish that they are separate formal reportable segments with distinct segment profit figures.[11][12] [11]

Company history

Siegfried was founded in 1873 in Zofingen, Switzerland, by pharmacist Samuel Benoni Siegfried and his brother-in-law Johann Wilhelm Dürselen, initially producing chemical-pharmaceutical preparations and trading in drugs [14][15]. It became a joint-stock company and listed on the Swiss stock exchange in 1973. The company shifted its focus first to developing and producing active pharmaceutical ingredients and medicines, then to custom development and contract manufacturing for pharmaceutical companies in 1983 and 1991, respectively [15].

Siegfried expanded through acquisitions: Penick Corporation in 2005, Alliance Medical Products in 2012, and Hameln Pharmaceuticals in 2014. In 2015, it took over pharmaceutical custom-synthesis and parts of the active-ingredient business from BASF, including sites in Switzerland, Germany and France [15][16]. It acquired two Novartis manufacturing sites in Spain in 2020, which joined Siegfried in 2021, the year its annual sales first exceeded CHF 1 billion [15][17]. In 2024, the company completed its acquisition of an early-phase contract development and manufacturing site in Grafton, Wisconsin [18]. [14]
