Shimizu Corporation is a Japan-based construction and engineering company founded in 1804 and headquartered in Tokyo. Its core business comprises building construction, civil engineering and overseas construction. Its named construction technologies include Shimizu Smart Site, which combines building-information modeling with autonomous robots for on-site work, and Shimizu Smart Tunnel, which applies ICT, IoT and AI to tunneling. Smart Site equipment includes the Exter crane, specified with a 12-ton rated load and a 3–25-meter working radius, and Robo-Buddy Floor, which installs raised-floor components to within 1 millimeter of the target position.[7]

Shimizu also develops building and materials technologies, including BILMUS, a system that uses a building’s structure for vibration control, and SUSMICS-C, concrete incorporating sawdust-derived biochar to store carbon. Its engineering work addresses building energy efficiency, renewable energy and net-zero-energy buildings.[11] [1]

Geographic presence

Shimizu Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo and has a domestic office network that includes branches in Sapporo, Sendai and Kanazawa. Japan accounts for most of its construction sales: in the year ended March 2025, the parent company reported ¥1,299.4 billion in domestic construction sales and ¥82.5 billion overseas, approximately 94% and 6%, respectively. These figures describe parent-company construction sales, not a geographic split of consolidated group revenue.[14][15]

Shimizu maintains overseas offices and subsidiaries across Asia, North America and the Middle East. Its listed locations include Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Manila, Taipei, Shanghai, Bangalore, Dubai, Atlanta and Querétaro. The overseas network includes both Shimizu offices and affiliated companies, rather than branches alone.[16][17] [15]

Shimizu reports four categories of consolidated segment sales: Shimizu’s construction business, Shimizu’s investment and development business, road paving, and Other. For the year ended March 2025, their respective shares of sales to external customers were approximately 70%, 3%, 8% and 19%. These percentages refer to the reported consolidated segment categories, rather than a geographic split of the group’s sales.[18]

Construction encompasses building construction and civil engineering work in Japan and overseas. Investment and development is associated with the company’s real estate development activities, while road paving is reported separately from Shimizu’s own construction business. The company also describes engineering, green energy development, building life-cycle and frontier activities in its business overview, but does not report each of those areas as a separate category in this sales breakdown.[1][18] [19]

Company history

Shimizu Corporation traces its origins to a carpentry business founded by Kisuke Shimizu I in Edo in 1804. Under his successor, Kisuke Shimizu II, the business built the Tsukiji Hotel in 1868 and the Dai-Ichi National Bank in 1872, early examples of Western-style construction in Japan.[22]

The business became a limited partnership in 1915 and was incorporated as Shimizu Gumi Co., Ltd. in 1937. It adopted the name Shimizu Construction Co., Ltd. in 1948, went public in 1961 and was listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1962. Shimizu opened a Singapore office in 1973 as part of its overseas expansion, and adopted Shimizu Corporation as its English name in 1987.[23][24] [22]
